To Sir Spectre: So What Do You Think Of FL?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

To Sir Spectre: So What Do You Think Of FL?

I cannot find a post from you about the game. This doesn't mean you haven't said anything. I'm just incapable of finding it.

You are one of the few, I think, who has followed the goings on at TLR for a very considerable amount of time before ever actually playing the game so I am curious to know whether this alters the experience.

And to keep this in the OT I am asking about what the experience was like to play a game that you'd so extensively been able to read about before playing.
Were you predisposed to like it? Disklike it? Were you disappointed? Would have been more fun to play without having ever visited TLR?

I think he played FL, maybe for a while, he even posted in the FL dicussions/spoilers a few times and he even called me daft there.

I think he did play FL but couldn't beat the game and got frustrated and tired of trying. He also probably kept wondering why he couldn't get his joystick to work and why his threads about this kept getting locked

Erm, SS didn't get to play FL til a short while ago as his comp wasn't up to the manly task of playing it. He had to wait to be able to afford the upgrades if i remember correctly. However, he was trapped by the forums here. He OWNED the game from about April last year i think, he just never got to play it.Wonder how many other "non-playing" members scalps TLR has

For clarification: I've been wanting to play this game since 1999. I've known about this site since April of 2003, I didn't start posting until May, as I did a lot of reading before I made posts, I've never been called a n00b or newbie.

I owned Freelancer as of October or early November of 2003 with expectation I would be getting my new computer soon. I received my custom spec computer at the end of Janurary. After some days of customizing the settings and adding in an extra DVD-Rom and HD, I was able to play Freelancer for the first time. 11 days later, I beat it.

As to your question about what it was like to read about and even do some editing on a game I had never tried ... I was probably able to appreciate it more. If I had owned it the first day it was out, I probably would have been put off by how different it is from the WC series I've known for so long.

There were some negative comments on the game and that kept me from overestimating what it would be like. In fact it dropped my expectations to a point that I was actually surprised how much better it was than that.

The neat thing about how I did it, it's fun to hear about a world or game you know nothing about for a while before venturing out. You don't feel so inexperienced coming out of the Manhatten docking ring for the first time.

I also got the game for cheaper by waiting.

And as for doing some mild editing of the ini's before I could play the game, it helped me gain an understanding of how the game works which was nice. It felt a little like being Neo and seeing the code as you fly through a tradelane.

I am actually always behind on games. When I use to play games more, I would play those that were 6 months older and half the price. When I finally finished or became bored with a title, a newer one would now be old and I'd get that for half the original price. Still new to me.

I can say the story of FL is not as satisfying as Privateer which I still play from time to time. But this is the first PC game I've ever owned where open play was nearly enough for fun and amusement. GTA for platforms would be the other open play that is still fun. I do say that I don't feel as compelled to play FL all the time as I did with the Privateers. Maybe because I'm older, however probably mostly due to the poor story. It's rather similar to Privateer 1, but without the great in-flight taunting system!

That's what I think. Overall, I'm pleased that I wasn't able to play it right away, it kept me on these forums longer and I had fun talking with all of you gents.

@Wolfy, are you going to print them out and hand them into your English class as your work?

I don't have the text files anymore. Just one large one with all of them together as I am now making one fluid story out of the 4 stories.

Thanks SnS.

That is very interesting. I imagine it helped that you already had Privateer and WC? In that you knew what space games were all about, mission play, SP, MP and stuff like that?

I wonder what it would be like for a non-space gamer. I'd never played one before FL and feel rather deprived. I can't find Starlancer, Privateer, Wing Commander or any of the other older titles yet.

I tried picturing myself finding TLR first, never having played FL or any other space game and I am not so sure I'd have been able to hang out and participate.... Well, OK, the OT is something else but I think it's common theme is that OT posters have at least played a space game or two if not FL.

Post Thu Apr 01, 2004 5:34 pm

@Indy, I had never played MP anything except Galactic Battlegrounds with my friend before Freelancer. And having done a little MP playing, I don't really get any extra enjoyment out of it over SP. Maybe if we set up an off-topic server and we all were on at the same time, I might enjoy that !

Regarding your wonderment about a non-space gamer finding this site, it would be unlikely to happen. Like I said, I've known about the creation of this game since 1999. I followed its production, searching more news naturally brought me here.

@Nickless

I think he played FL, maybe for a while, he even posted in the FL dicussions/spoilers a few times and he even called me daft there.

That I did and as Griffon pointed out, I also posted mostly in General Editing forum. I never read any specific spoilers though. I occasionally glanced at posts that dealt with problems or general critiques. In editing, from what I knew about how the game worked, I was able to come up with a few ideas for neat little things. For instance, a fighter with no shield that was actually an asteroid with engines, extremely strong armor and could belong to a pirate group in an asteroid field. Also, I asked if it was possible to give asteroids and planets Patrol routes to simulate eliptical orbits. More for the asteroid, as it would be strange if the planet appeared on a path on one visit, but not the next visit to the system. I was also one of the first asking if tradelanes could go up and down or at angels. I pictured something a little different in my head, but it turned out to be possible. I also, surmised it would be possible to put all 4 houses in one system and with "area_assaults" (that's the command line) you could have a system embroiled in all-out war with each other. While I don't know if anyone has done a mod where the houses are fighting for control over a system, Chips has all 4 houses on one planet in his mod.

I'be been tweaking ini's for other programs I have for years. So for me it wasn't that difficult to understand what this game was and was not capable of.

@Matt

@Indy - I think he played, he just keeps to the off topic forum now days and doesnt wonder the the noob world of Freelancer Discussion and Spoilers.

Actually, I still post quite a bit in Privateer the Reckoning forum, sometimes in Pathfinders forum (Chips' Evolutions forum), General Editing and sometimes Freelancer Discussion. I never really ever posted in Spoilers Forum though, on a few occasions only.

In fact I was in General Editing forum when Uba struck. I was in Freelancer Discussion when Hey struck. And Reynet was from all over General Editing and Starfyre Studios forums. It's sort of funny to think I wrote 4 plays about a site whose subject was a game I had never played.

In fact I'm helping a bit with a great new thing to revolutionize how we play FL in General Editing. The Dynamic Market system, where a program is being written by Accushot to alter prices on goods and to be able to buy your own base with your own faction and income. You merely have to start it first, it loads FL for you, but before it does it updates the ini's with new variables upon each start of the game. All based on your actions too!

All the things you guys didn't know about me.
