Most annoying missions in space sims

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Most annoying missions in space sims

To me, these are baby-sitting duties. Everyting else is nothing compared to that. I hate them the most, no matter what the game. Somehow I think that there will be not many ppl who would point out sth else. I'd love to be wrong, otherwise my post would be totally pointless. Anyway, I'm drinking today, so I can allow myself to get a bit astray .
Chreers, TLR, here's a toast to you, guys! *raises a 1L glass of beer*

I know what you mean... its just SO obvious that the convoy (it always is a convoy) is going to be attacked when you guard it and yet nobody seems to realise this. After the first few times HQ should realise that all the convoys you protect come under fire and reassign you to someting else. I figure you couldn't go far wrong if you were told to babysit an enemy convoy.

My least favourite ones are the ones which endlessly redirect you to another place to do the actual mission, or where you fight your way through a ton of enemies, only to find that there are more on their way

@The Evil Thing (a brother soul ): If it's a convoy, it depends whether you're allowed to lose some of them or none. The latter version sux, the more as your wingmen ALWAYS seem to ignore your commands. However, the worst thing is to protect a SINGLE ship (I must admit, SL was quite "friendly" in this respect, compared to, say Tachyon, where you're only allowed one (useless) wingman (or a wingwoman - just to please potential feminists ) and have to face swarms of enemies).
@Darkstone: believe, this is not the wors option, unless you're overrun and there's no savegame, so you have to start everything anew. Otherwise, the more enemies, the better, as long as you have to care only for yourself.

Yes, the old "babysitting" missions are irritating, but I'd rather escort a convoy that is going to be attacked than one that is incident-free, travels at 20k/sec, and takes about two hours to get to the jump point!

torp-hunting, i really am rubbish at it. Torps in SL and TFoTE & TvX:BoP, skipper missiles in WC3 and Prophecy, space bombs in FS and FS2. Always took me ages and usually got me very frustrated. Some I actually never completed and others I managed once. I'm so cr*p

Me too, like Taw, i hate the nessesety of destroying
40 or so torps, that move fast have tons of health, and
are launched from opposidt sides of the map, in other ,
words SL, defend the Reliant while it makes ready to jump
to fort Baxter (well i think its baxter)

Oh Damn, i gotta do my Maths H/W

Torpedo-hunting is always irritating (it ws overdone SO much in SL), but how else can you give a player a chance to properly defend a capship?

Post Tue Mar 30, 2004 5:04 pm

heheh, when i read this title was gonna say the torp hunting in starlancer was way overused, seems like I wasn't the only one lol, now I don't mind tracking down a couple torpedos, or perhaps a large sum of them one time, I just disliked how it was almost every other missions in which they did that in starlancer.

Post Tue Mar 30, 2004 5:11 pm

Exactly! They overdid it. Still, it was a good game despite the "Defend the Nanny!" missions .

Perhaps you all would prefer a cargo run next time, it can be arranged, lets move out.

I would actually prefer the babysitting jobs, with other missions something inevitably goes incredibly wrong, yet, well, so do the cargo runs, but a cargo convoy is raltivley easy to defend, gives good money and if pretty easy, as opposed to a near impossible one on one hundred battleship hunting missions, even though they offer massive rewards.

Bah! i always got the torps on the second go of the mission!
as for the last mission x_x

Yup have to agree protecting the ol' convoy has got to be the most annoying. And what is the bloody deal with the turrets on these things, the AI couldn't hit the broadside of a mountain range. Makes you kinda wonder how they got the job of turret gunner in the first place?

"Mayday Maday we're under attack and we employed union representatives as our turret gunners"

"I ain't shootin a damn thing until we get a 30 minute cigarette break in the afternoon."

I hate convoy missions, why would they expect me...... who can barely look after myself, i mean, its just not a great idea to put other lives in my hands mmkay? I hated them most in the Mechwarrior series, where your giant 80 ton robot has a hard enough time lining up enemies (not really, you could easily strafe a hundred tanks in these meanies, im just looking for excuses) . I must admit Convoy missions, as annoying as they are, do actually have a atmosphere about them, you cant help but get that tingly feeling moving along a convoy knowing your the only defense and you better be a good one Though for example in mechwarrior 4, they had i think 2-3 convoy missions and they were a pain in the ass. You would be strolling along protecting 3 scuds, suddenly you see some trails in the air, long range missiles take out one truck, 2 mechs incoming with a buncha tanks and helicopters, and your fighting them off and in the heat of battle, while trying to manage your weapons, heat, speed and so forth, you given the death treatment. You know what im talking about, when you get a few convoy death messages at once like "truck 1 destroyed! truck 2 destroyed!..........................................truck 3 destroyed! mission failed!"

On the other hand, thanks to my hate for these missions theres nothing i love more than Convoy Assault missions. Once more a honorable mention here is Mechwarrior, nothing beats sitting there, waiting in ambush, as a convoy slowly rolls through and you ambush the **** out of it. Seriously, THE defining point of the word AMBUSH is attacking a convoy i believe . Another HATE of mine has to be swarming missions , you know in some games, like Medal Of Honor and others, where in certain missions, triggering a certain whatnot releases unlimited streams of enemies on you? i hate that. Say if im sneaking about in Medal Of Honor, which usually isnt very hard since im usually a fairly stealth oriented player. I accidentally trigger an alarm, and for the next hour im searching for that damn guard booth 200 enemies are shooting at me from a million sides at once and i cant even look straight without taking 50 bullets in the face. Thats all i can think of for now

PS: Oh yeah, who ****in likes timed missions? any missions with a timer is a personal hate of mine.

"I see dumb people....... they 're everywhere. They walk around like everyone else. They dont even know their dumb"

I don't mind escorting convoys if the game is not overwhelmed by them. I don't even mind tractoring in items important to a mission (escape pods, data pods) as long as there aren't too many. But what I smeggin' hated in WC4 was taking pictures with the picture gun! How bloody boring! Not to mention the game had too many escorting and tractoring missions too. Great plot, but WC3 was a lot more fun.

Oh, and I also hate "destroy the torpedoes" missions, especially in Starlancer.
