A bug in the download!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

A bug in the download!

Just got through formating my Pc, and reloading almost all. I had downloaded a couple of files and Got the Blue Screen of death, memory dump. Could not even get it into safe mode. Scan what ever you down load. I think what ever I got got to the bios, when reinstalling, said reinstalling default bios. It has Never done this in any reformating before.

Lost a bunch of files and mail.

oh this is a common problem. could be bad/conflicting hardware, bad/conflicting setup files, a virus, bad sector on the hdd, fonk memory or not enough memory. oh well at least you have a clean slate to start again with

seriously it happens to us all. that's why you backup before you re-format, FD.

Backed up about 5 days ago. lost a few things. The only new hardware i have added was new ram. Everything else is at least 10 months ago with the vid card upgrade. It happened after a download, and Then went to use Firefox for a search when the computer started clicking. Then Blue screen. It's back to normal now after reinstall. I could not even get in to do a new back up. At least my backup hard drive only has data on it, no OS.

I still think it was a software problem. I have a bad habit of downloading share ware yto try and get some really bad stuff. I will be more carefull from now on. The error message said it could be a program file missin g, so I still wonder if a worm came with a program and got loose with out being scanned. I will let Norton scan everything I down load before I install anymore.

probly more like a corrupt file that changed the MFT or one of the critical .ini files or the ntoskernel, anything really. if you download anything and it isn't installing correctly, then roll-back the installation, this is esp critical for anything that's going to have an noticeable impact on system files.

Roll-back the installation? Are you advocating he use "System Restore", Taw? I didn't know you swung that way!

Post Mon Mar 29, 2004 5:30 pm

In the past, I have used sys restore. It has only worked correctly 50% of the time. The other 50% said could not restore.

This time however, I could not even get back into windows, even in safe mode.

well not System Restore of itself, it's pooh and has never worked for me as a full restore. However using it to roll-back an individual prog or driver that's gone t*ts-up usually works, I find. That's all I meant.

That's alright then .
