Ah, yet another advantage of having an obscenely long email address that doesn't fit in the box.

I think Bargib's gonna be remaking the site or something like, and he's including something called "private email addresses" which I hope will fix the problem.

In retrospect, it's not at all surprising that people get these viruses. These forums must be like easy meat for these guys. All those email addresses, so easy to get...

I delete any e-mail that I know I didn't sign up for, as I don't trust them. If you get an e-mail that has a file attachment, and you don't know who it's from, delete it immediately. This is how I avoid most worms and viruses. I use Yahoo! for my e-mail needs.

NEW QUESTION

Some poster who is new to these forums (who posts in another forum) sent me an .avi file to show how he may have an XP problem while playing FL, which is somewhat based on a conversation I was privy to, but not really a part of. First he didn't let me know he would do it, second, the file is smeggin' huge (for email accounts that is), third I don't know him, fourth, wtf am I suppose to do about it? I don't know hardly anything about XP.

I seriously doubt I would click on it even if it was deemed completely safe. But now I am questioning whether media type files can carry viruses? And no, there is no extension beyond the .avi.

The email was directly to me with a "Sir S" and a note according to the previously mentioned conversation. It seems legit. Your input to me, will determine how I respond to him, whether it'll be a simple chiding for assuming too much or for something more.

BTW, this is a http email account I am using, so I can't scan it unless I download it, which I don't want to do. Which is also why none of the viruses I've gotten have affected me whatsoever.

Under the circumstances, I would delete it. If he and it are legit, he will write/contact you again asking about it. If he is not legit, You will save your self a headache.

Remember that it could be a "?????.avi .exe" type of filename, so it will appear to have an extension that it doesn't. I wouldn't trust it. Delete it, and tell the person to go to the "FL Technical Forum" like everybody else.

I have a thought SS, and I'll email it to ypu (no attachments! ) because I don't want to offend anyone.

One of the reasons to run some new forum software is to actually HIDE the email accounts, since viruses can look through the browser cache for emails to send itself to.

So one regular visitor to the TLR Forums could hit most of us here!

Hey, bargib, will we lose our post count on the new forums?

@Esqy <---I've decided I like this form of your name the best. I tried it several ways, but this way works the best for me. It reminds me of the Espy awards.

Anyway, i did say it didn't have an .exe on it. I've seen those types in the past. But if I can infer something from your post, you're saying that .avi files, by themselves, cannot contain viruses at this time in technology?

I know .zip files have found a way to contain viruses, obviously, .exe's, .bat's, .com's & .pif's can contain viruses, any other types?

Sir S

AVI files, etc, do not usually contain viruses, but because Windows does not provide an icon for PIF files as a default, the files can appear to be legitimate. Theoretically, anything that executes code on your machine can be a virus, but I have never encountered an infected AVI file. This is not to say that there aren't any however. Just remember Esky's First Rule of Avoiding Computer Infections; Don't open attachments!

On a related matter, I'm pretty sure that I received a worm two days ago; it was a "Please check in this ZIP file for your attachment" sort of message. Needless to say I took a laugh at its lack of subtlety, and deleted it.

I like "Esky" because that is an Australian drink cooling apparatus (see link), and thus it is amusing. "Esqy", "Eskie", etc, are fine. It's all good .

Laxy... you have rules?

Post Wed Apr 07, 2004 4:46 pm

Hel - Kind of. It sometimes helps if my suggestions are termed "rules". That way, they are taken more seriously. You know what I mean; there are heaps of people who don't listen, and then come crying to us when they get a worm. Still, if people did listen, we IT Support people would be out of the job!

Laxy? Ick, that's pretty bad .
