Russian nuclear warship 'could blow up'

Russia's naval commander has ordered the country's nuclear-powered flagship to return to base immediately, saying it may explode at any time.

sad that a once great nation should be reduced to this condition.

mind you, even when they were a force to be reckoned with, things weren't much better in the Soviet Navy. Whilst their designers had some good ideas, esp. as regards underwater performance and range, as exemplified in the Alfa-class attack subs (like in Hunt for Red October) they sacrificied safety by cutting down on testing and used sub-standard materials and extremely questionable construction methods.

Now of course most of their fleet sits rotting in harbours, killing fish and polluting the seas, when it's not killing their own sailors

Thier navy has been in bad shape for years, safety wise. Its just bad enough now that it may not be the enemy that kills you, your own ship can do it. There was a bit on TV years ago of russina sailors complaining about the shody nuclear protection on their subs. It was almost a death sentence to be assigned to work near the reactor.

That's smart- it's gonna explode, so... we take it to a military base with lot's of people!
Always loved Russian ingenuity...

*Sigh* If Stalin were alive, he'd probably kill himself...
Russia was great and powerful, now it could just about outfight Poland.
POLAND FOR GOD'S SAKE!
What we need is somewkind of peoples revolution in Russia. That usually works...

I second ff's post. This could have been nice but too over-politicked already. The pieces are in position for a political fest.

It is possible to keep it on the physics of it. Having a nuke on a ship may make it be able to stay under a long time, but not without risks. You have advantages of not having to refuel for a long time, and provided a good air filtering, circulation, purifing system, you could stay down for long days. Me, I hate being in small spaces too long.

It would certainly would be an environmental disaster, but it wouldn't be close to the scale of the Chernobal explosion. So rest assured the human race will survive.

Oh and please stay away from the politics guys.

it isn't going to blow up. it might meltdown though. Any explosion is more likely to come from the munitions or the steam turbine system. Nuclear reactors can't blow up, although they can BE blown up and scatter their radioactive stuff to the atmosphere. But its an ordinary explosion, not a big nuclear whumph.

I dunno if an environmental disaster in Murmansk would be such a disaster, as the place is already completely polluted and riddled with radiation and other toxic stuff. No seriously, like no-one lives there unless they HAVE to, and it's already an ecological nightmare.
