is this a good Graphics Card?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Taw, I am that povvo......I was "unemployed" for the past 9 months since leaving teaching, it was mainly out of my own voilition to live a bit, but in last 2 months i ran out of money . NO - i didn't get social security, self funded on my savings the whole way............however, just got a job, so am thinking of upgrading finally. Just nice to know that M/B is good for a while yet, and processor should (i hope) be good for a year or so as well before upgrade). HDD and Graphics card are my ones that need upgrading, and after that some fancy stuff............but I will never be able to afford the best stuff, just want good quality that will mean i don't upgrade for another year or two. I have a 64Mb Nvidia at the mo.

Actually - something more pressing that those two is the monitor, I am using a REALLY old Mitac monitor - must be '93 - '95 or so, 15inch thing. Its small, incapable of high res (does 1028 x 968 or sommat), but no such thing as drivers available or other stuff .........peering hard to see stuff sometimes

I must say i would have a good look at some benchmark sites ill think you will find that though radion has the tec the Gforce far out performs it. The radion is and has always been plagued with problems when used in a gaming rig u must download fix after fix then when youve done that u must set the card up for each game. the new generation of radion has fixed some things but its still not perfect.

as for nvidia most games are writen with the G force for the G force just look at any gaming mag and as i sit here i've got a mag from a shop near me www.crssolutions.co.uk
price of g force a fx5600xt with 256mb £86.95
price for a g force fx5900with 256mb £229.95
price for a radeon with 256mb £343.75 9800xt
128mb £96.25 9600se

i know what my choice was best 86.95 i ever spent

@taw LOL. I thought I'd done a lot of jobs in the past (designer, sound engineer, librarian, tour guide, canal barge driver, electrician, washing machine repair man, fridge freezer refurber, warehouse lacky (x3), bakery mechanic, picker, fork lift driver, delivery man...and the list goes on )...but I really have nothing on you! Is there a pie you haven't had your finger in?

Thanks guys, never tried ebay yet - not too trusting, but i have a paypal account, so payment can be through that i am sure

I don't usually trust "reviews" that much, mainly as it depends what they are looking at and with what perspective.

Like if you ask people whats the best stuff is, opinion differs massively, but you would go with the poeple that you know and trust the judgement of over those you don't have a clue who they are, and might be paid off to be nice

Same with Films, read the write up in the papers by critics, and I will probabily watch the most boring tripe ever, but if my friend says its an awesome film, i know I am going to love it as well. Always trust people who i know over those i have never met..........

So it will be the same with comp parts, magazines might give it an awesome rating, but consumer opinion (especially with price tags) is best, cause magazines have those "endless pockets" - kinda like those programs taht profess to tell you the latest fashion, then bring out poeple wearing 800 quid clothes, 200 quid shoes etc, and you HAVE to ask what the hell are they doing? Why show stuff that it will take most poeple a MONTH of work to be able to afford....for ONE item - totally stupid Oh well, best stop there before i rant more

Thanks

@Chips,

If you are staying with a CRT monitor, there are an abundance of very low priced fairly high resolution larger screen choices. Everyone has a preference and I think it very much depends on where you are and how well any one brand is distributed in your area. You likely will be able to get at least a very good 17" monitor for something in the area of $250.

If you are thinking of getting the best, it still seems to be the 20" Sony Trinitron (GDF520 $1,700) but you better hurry because I hear these babies will be disappearing soon as Sony and others decide to switch over exclusively to LCD and Plasma displays.

Your Mobo is OK for upgrading the CPU. Some may quibble with your SiS chipset, the Intels are generally preferred, the Intel mobos as well if you are going with Pentiums but Intels are not as attratively priced.

@Esqy,

Taw was not the one pushing the 9800XT, that was Xeno.

I just upgraded my video card to an ATI Radeon 9200SE 128meg from a Geforce2 MX400 64 meg video card about a month and a half ago. I'm on budget, but the increase in performance was staggering. I only have a Duron 1.3 GHZ machine so it helps out a lot. I recommend a 9200se for those on a real tight budget such as myself. If you've got the money to burn though, go for the best money can buy. Any Radeon 9800 card would do you fine.

captin_j - I think that you have it backwards. The Radeon cards outstrip the GF's in almost every benchmark, and the GF's have "superior" ie. newer technology. For example, "C for Graphics".

Indy - Bah! Taw, Xeno, they all look the same to me .

@Chips: No problem, Dude. Anytime.

Ah yes, the GeForce 2 MX400, I remember it well. Not a bad card during its day, but it didn't have any pixel shaders, so it's completely useless for modern games. I've still got mine around here somewhere...

I put my Geforce2 in it's original box. I think it's still floating around somewhere in my room. I suppose I could use it for target practice.
