A response from Worth''s mother

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

A response from Worth''s mother

I was very pleased to see that Worth's mother has emailed me back. She gave me some details about his cancer and a research place to donate to that dealt with his condition.

She also provided me with a Memorial of Worth. It has lots of picture, a short biography and I think even video. For all of his friends, see with whom you were chatting.

Thank you for your very kind words. Worth was so optimistic as to make may people conclude that he would someday overcome the dastardly disease, rhabdomyosarcoma, a smooth muscle tissue tumor, which began in his neck. Worth was diagnosed Christmas Eve 2001. He preferred to focus on the positive and strive to get better, even to his last breath. You can see photos from his brief but full life on www.mem.com. Search for last name Riley. He would be 17 years old tomorrow.

A donation made to the American Cancer Sociey at www.cancer.org would be used in part for research. Worth's doctor is invited to respond to this message if there is any other organization which is wholly devoted to cancer research.

Sincerely,

Many of us at Lancer's Reactor have taken your son's death very hard. We have had great discussions with him and all agree he was a humorous lad. Most of all we were surprised by his strength. We knew of some of his difficulties, but he always kept his spirits high. With a laugh and a chuckle he would joke about a bad day, We never realized how serious his condition was, nor do we know what particular cancer he had.

If you could provide that information with me and if you know of a certain research group that studies it, some of us at Lancer's Reactor would like to donate in Worth's memory to furthering the research of his particular cancer. I don't know how much it will be, some on the forums are even younger than Worth, but even they expressed an interest in this idea.

If you feel giving out this info is too personal, that is all right. We will simply make the donation to a general study of cancer in your area if possible.

I don't know if this is appropriate or it may bring new grief, but I have quoted below your son's last post on Lancer's Reactor. He was responding to some encouraging words we gave him when he went into the hospital.

I don't know how Cancer.org takes donations in honor of people, but I'm sure there is a way.

Thank you Sir Spectrespeare. My god he was so young.

@Anyone interested

There are many different ways to donate. Some are on-line.

Check here for American Cancer Society Donation Options.

This is where you can donate money over the net, as a memorial gift: Click here.

This should help.

Edit: Also, if you don't like to give money over the internet, you can send it by mail to any cancer research organisation.

Another thing you can do is visit this site which will allow you to download a program. This program will be used to conduct experiments on your computer that will help in the research of cancer (and if you have this selected, Smallpox). Members of the Ioncross community, myself included, have made a group and we are, or, rather, our computers are researcing Cancer.

Just to be clear, this program should not affect you computer usage at all, it hasn't affected me. None of us have had any problems with spyware and the like, so I am fairly sure that this is safe. If I wern't fairly sure, I wouldn't be trying to get others to do this.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

It's nice that we can finally see Warlord Bob in living color. This also helped us learn more about Worth's life.

OT: Jez, Currahee! 101st Airborne all the way!

Darn, I wasn's able to finish watching the photos - a sobbing man is not the sight I want my colleagues to see...

What is the shortened version of "Commodore?" Warlord Bob was one and I'm looking at the donation Online thing at Cancer.org, I know it's not exactly typical to say a 17 year old was a Commodore, but what the heck!

Is it:
Cdr.
Cmdr.
Como.
Or something not listed?

Sir S

Post Tue Mar 16, 2004 8:20 am

@Sns,

The US Navy abbreviates like this:

Commodore = Cmd.

Commander = Cdr.

A Commodore (no longer used by USN) would be the equivalent of say, a Brigadier General. A Commander (still in use) would be a Lt. Colonel.

A full Colonel is a Captain in the Navy which is just below what used to be Commodore and now is some kind of Admiral.....but now I am really digressing.
Sorry.
