New Planet Discovered

I just thought that you guys might find this interesting. Apparently, NASA have discovered a new planet in the solar system (although some argue that it is too small to be called a planet). I'll cut and paste from /.; The new planet, dubbed Sedna after the Inuit goddess of the sea, is 3 billion km further from the sun than Pluto, and is slightly smaller at 2000km in diameter. Here is a link from The Australian. There's supposed to be a press conference today with more information.

Some also doubt that Pluto is a planet.

Imo a planet is some big, round, spinning object orbiting the sun.

Wish they had a pic of it though...

You were gone?

Edit: Damn spelling.

Did you get that from /.

Bah! I was just comming here to post exactly the same story. Looks like we must both be slacking off reading the news instead of working Esq?

Anywho I don't know is you can class a big chunk of ice and rock as a planet. In my book it has to have some form of atmosphere to be a planet.

Yes, GM .

Mustang - Actually, it was a really busy day, but I still had some time though. Tomorrow, I'll have even more! I'm just surprised that Kimk didn't post it. I tend to agree with you about planets requiring atmospheres, but then some people call gas giants planets as well. It's all a matter of semantics.

it'll end up named Rupert, mark my words

that's no planet, it's a space station.

It's an Outcast or Corsair asteroid base. Trust me, I've made contact with the mothership in the past few hours.

*Thwacks KS* Stop spamming up my thread! It'll be named after me!

It's interesting that it has only just been discovered. Actually, considering the vast dimensions of space, it's probably not that odd now that I think about it.

I still want to know who they sent out there to measure it. Scopes at this distance could not possible be accurate. What they should call it is a planetoid for that small or a large asteroid.

Bah! If that gets called a planet I could technically take a dump, launch it into solar orbit and that'd be classed as a planet........*strokes imaginary beard* hmmmmm

Post Mon Mar 15, 2004 10:12 pm

Maybe they should, Final. That's why they're debating it!

Mustang - *Shakes head* Watch those statements! This is a family site after all... no beards!

With Uranus already in the system, I don't really want a planet that can easily be joked being Esquilaxitive. That's just makes for a disturbing thought and will feed bad comedians for a whole generation.
