We both reckon that gaining 20Ibs before the wedding might be a bit of ****!

I'm hearing you Grom, I quit a bit over a year ago now and Im having a rank time trying to keep to a reasonable weight. I was borderline underweight when I was on them and now im borderline overweight since I quit. Currently I go to the gym 3 times a week and I'm considering taking up jogging on the other days just to keep it in check. I hate to think what i'd be like if I wasn't excercising.

You know, in all the time I've been here a thread about smoking has noy been brought up much on my watch. I recall maybe 2 or 3. And good arguments on both sides, not much ranting and raving.

I smoke a few less than a pack a day marlboro red 100's and have for 20 plus years. I think banning anything is an invasion of privacy on one level. Yet as the majority will always have their way when it comes to health, we shouldn't be shocked. Yea, I'm mad about not being able to go sit down in some places and not be able to light up if I want, but I've still got a choice not to go in. Just like the non-smokers have the same choice not to go in a place that allows it. I think we're both getting screwed to be honest.

Soon they will ban something YOU like to do, remember that.

/non-political rant over.

Its an outrage here in Holland, You can't even Smoke decently in the confines of a VERY large Storage room. they just banned it as well, it can do virtually no harm whatsoever, but those @#^^%&* just banned it

Like Grom I smoke Roll ups, straight from the pack. as I have a rather stressfull job (not too tough for me as I am constantly covered in Nicotine, its a big stress reliever), I smoke a lot. I smoke about 30-40 a day, Roll ups that is
I use a bag of what we call shag (no pun whatsoever intended) which comes in "bales" of 50 grams a bag, on more then one occassion I use a large rolling paper made of Rice paper and put a few grams in that one, and smoke it while I try to work, I do this about 3 times a day. Next to that I smoke cigars (La Paz, wild Havana blend, a real recommendation).

Those bags cost about €4,50 a bag and a tenfold for a pack of ten (Dûûûhhh)
but as I am well connected I get them a lot cheaper.

But not to drift from Topic, I say, put those nice little warnings on the packs, I ignore them anyway, They make no sense anyway, People choose to smoke so why should they be warned about the hazards of it??

About the death treats on the packages zlo was referrign to in his original post: We've had (maybe still have, I'm sure Loc has them in his favourites ) sites where you can create your own text to go on those packs.

Some actually came up with funny texts.

Edit: Damn spelling.

@Locutus, I recall reading someones work, His name that he goes by is Brother Andrew. He was a dutchman as well. He wrote of a ritual on sundays of coffee and cigars. Any truth to that?

Smoking can still be done, just not in areas that the second hand smoke will effect others. Believe it or not, but back in the 30's and 40's it was doctors that PROMOTED smoking. Listen to some old radio show tapes like Abbot and Costello. They did a lot of damage. I lost 2 grandfathers to smoking. Both died in their 50's of lung cancer

During both World Wars but more so in the Second, cigarettes were seen as an absolute necessity for the troops to support their morale, etc. The affects of nicotine already were appreciated back then.

Post Fri Mar 05, 2004 5:24 pm

Those warning labels are here in Aus. too. I think that people should be able to do what they like, as long as it doesn't impinge upon anyone else. Smoking does; that's why I hate it. If people want to kill themselves slowly over a long period of time, then great, but do it somewhere where I don't have to inhale second-hand smoke. If I offend anyone, sorry, but I stand by my statements. Note: I have never smoked a cigarette, and I never will. I have enough problems as it is!

Post Fri Mar 05, 2004 7:24 pm

I agree, it's fine if you smoke do it if you want, but second hand smoke is almost as bad, The only reason I really like Mayor blumeburg is because he passed the smoking ban. one of my best friends is a smoker, But I don't like it when he smokes around me.

I had a super Ego, but it was pestering me so I killed it.

Post Fri Mar 05, 2004 7:26 pm

I have my shares of disagreement with the near-total ban...

I think smoking is disgusting, and smokers who refuse to acknowledge the rights of non-smokers to breathe fresh air are assholes. But that does not mean they should be treated like pariahs! It's almost ridiculous. How about just enforcing the old "shall I seat you in the smoking or non-smoking section, sir?" and make waiters able to refuse orders to work in the smoking section if they choose to. There are plenty of space for everyone, smokers and non-smokers alike. And I think the grotesque warnings are fair.

and PS: not even Amsterdam is safe. Before I left, you could see people swarming the special "smoking poles"

Smokers, come to Indonesia if you like. Selfish assholes roam the streets and smoke in enclosed, air-conditioned environments, hospitals, bus stops, and in the vicinities of infants etc like they own those damn places what is too strictly imposed in the West is much too lax here.

Post Sat Mar 06, 2004 4:25 pm

FF - Yes, it's not very fair, but what can you do? There must be a happy medium somewhere, but I don't know where .

Post Sat Mar 06, 2004 5:47 pm

Other than the physical habit of smoking, its nicotine that smokers are after. The smokers should try to switch to either gum or the patch. Health wise, they would do better them selves with out the tar and deadly chemicals that are in cigarets as well as the cancer causing aspects. Nor would they offend the non-smokers.

So Finalday, what you're saying is, it's okay if they get the drug they're after, just not in the form of a cigarette? Not as safe as not smoking, but it is safer than smoking. Nice place to meet halfway. That's just my opinion, I'm too young to smoke so It doesn't really matter to me as much as it does to all of you.

Post Sat Mar 06, 2004 6:40 pm

Eh-Steve, no, it does still matter about the drug use of it. It's just that until the smoker makes up his or her mind to quit, it is healthier for the non-smoker if they get it in a better, or rather, cleaner way. Their clothes, hair, and home would smell better and those they date would not have to worry about kissing an ashtray. Financially, they would be better off because of the cost if they quit and health wise as well. My Dad, hard as it was quit because when we were kids he was worried about the affects of the smoke on us. His health improved, tired less too. Anything is possible.
