Mars Mission

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

<ahem>

Elsewhere, I started a thread about the Earth's magnetic poles switching. My information was greeted with quite a bit of indifference <sniff>.

Regarding one hypothesis of the condition in which we find Mars is that it too had a protective magnet field that, most importantly, prevented the solar winds from wearing away most of the Mars' atmosphere. Consider also that Mars' specific gravity is less than ours so it had less attractant qualities to hold onto its atmosphere.

Don't worry, Indy. I'm listening to you, even if no-one else is .

water confirmed

they say they found strong evidence of water in the past. this is kinda old.. sittin in my mailbox for some time.. thought you guys might be interested..

water
they say they found strong evidence of water, confirming its presence in the past.. but no teletubbies..

its hardly suprising really. I mean they know that other areas of the solar system have ice on them, and speculate that water arrived on earth via comets as well as through release by the earths crust. Therefore - as planets cooled down (after water was liberated by the crust) they would have water vapour condensing as rain.. Furthermore - i heard that Mars used to have an atmosphere as well - but due to the fact that it got stripped away by solar radiation from the sun (as mars didn't have the magnetic field necessary to deflect the rays), it meant that the atmosphere was lost etc.....probabily along with any most liquids/gases iin the atmosphere/surface too

It's like with everything else. Factual certainty does not occur until direct evidence of that fact is encountered. I think most everyone has believed that there is water (ice) on Mars. The question is whether it ever was present on the planet away from the poles and in liquid form.

The current Mars rover disclosures tend to point out that water, in liquid form, may have been present away from the poles of Mars at one time. That would mean that there was an atmosphere of some sort that was dense enough to support liquid water at one time.

These rover discoveries are not 100% conclusive but very much more compelling proof of the hypothesis.

All kidding aside, I would like to meet anyone who would be willing to GO to mars. The time up, there, and back would be close to 2 years. Going, you can use thrust, gravity of the moon, ect to pick up speed, but coming back, you would have very limited fuel to pick up much thrust, so that means the trip back would take so much time confined in even a shuttle would get clostephobic.

"Suspended animation" might be the way to go for those long interplanetary trips. Just don't depend on any computer called "Hal" .

Final - I think you mean "claustrophobic" . What are you all looking at me like that for? Everyone else gets to correct other people's english!

Before we even think about those kinds of trips we need to come up with some new propulsion trips first. What we have now will get us to Mars but one day we will have to think outside of journeys of two years. They have some new designs but I still dont think they have anything major. A major step will be to devolp a safe form of bringing nuclear driven propulsin into space. Maybe even a fusion generated power supply.
Does any one remember the movie where they drop the nuclear bomb behind the ship and use its force to propel the ship forward. Would that work in theory. The concept seems sound but i cant quite grasp it.

@Esq, I'm still waiting for TLR to get a spell checker English was my least favorite subject in school and spelling was the worst part.

Arch wants to go to Mars. seriously, he really wants to travel in space and go on missions and stuff.

Post Fri Mar 05, 2004 6:58 am

Me too. I would love to make it up into "outer space." I'm pretty sure that the only way I will be able to do that is if I have my remains shot up into orbit after I die.... unless they institute affordable civilian passenger or sight-seeing service.

Don't think I'd be able to make it Mars or the Moon but I sure would like to go.

Final - I know how it is. Actually I don't; English was always my best subject .

Taw - Who doesn't want to fly around in the void and do missions? Would we be here on TLR, playing FL if we had no such aspirations?

I would be willing to go up in the space shuttle and take my chances. A week in space would be fantastic, but 2 years would not.
