AIM = Spyware

Greetings. I read this and thought that I should mention it, as a large number of people around here seem to use AOL Instant Messenger. According to this link, AIM contains spyware which downloads large advertising GIFs and movie trailers to your PC using your internet connection. As there is nothing indicating the program in the installation, and that it installs itself without the user's knowledge, I think that we can classify it as spyware.I have never trusted AOL, and my suspicions would seem to be supported by the article (see link). I just thought I'd let you know. Thoughts?

paranoid, as usual

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams

I'm not paranoid! I'm just a concerned third party who is doing his civic duty in advising people to avoid those recreants at AOL .

This is exactly why I move exclusively to Trillian

Everything has spyware in it these days, that's why I keep my trusty firewall scanning both outgoing and incomming traffic.

Post Mon Mar 01, 2004 4:24 pm

I like my firewall too! Here's something interesting I just found. A guy did a comparison between Ad-Aware and SpyBot (nothing new), but I thought that I might offer you guys a link to it anyway. The conclusion might surprise you.

ff - You're just as paranoid as I am, and don't say it ain't so!

Trillian Pro I presume? I had Trillian Basic(the free version) installed and uninstalled again in two hours. No thank you, call again when you've resolved some of those issues..

Ya, I got pro. I had basic before, and I don't see much of a diffrence.

I haven't used Windows Messenger (I know, I know, long story) for months. The only people I chat to are my two cousins. I HATE chatting with people I don't know. And I also hate *shudder* webcams. Sorry, I had to get that out of my system .

Amen brother, I like to keep my anonimity when Im online. That's one of the reasons I 86'd ICQ. I had a constant stream of 15 year old girls wanting to engage in pointless conversation, great if your a 15 year old lad looking for nookie but it's not really enthralling stuff.

Bloody ICQ! Damn piece of over-hyped junk is overly large, has many exploits, adware, and contains a port scanner! I hate it so MUCH!?!? Sorry, long story.

I don't know if anyone has heard of PalTalk. But it can be set to talk to only those you put in. And can be done with video if you have a web cam.
