in answer to your question...no...I don't believe for one minute that either of them would have had the same effect on society if drugs were out of the equation. Would they still have been as good? Well Hendrix would still be a talented guitarist yes, his early stuff proves that, but Morrison? Naah don't think so. They would have been an unknown surfer garage band without the drugs influencing the music. I don't think Hendrix would have made it to the scale he did either - remember, there's no way that he would have played woodstock and knocked out the famous star spangled banner without tripping.
And sadly, as per usual, they both became a great deal more famous AFTER they died...so no....without drugs things would have been very very different. Strange really - very very slowly we're watching a similar cult status surround the late Kurt Cobain....when I was a kid and into them, everyone hated Nirvana, they were just too damn loud....then he blows his head off and literally overnight kids all over the world are wearing "memorial" t-shirts....and we're already seeing the next generation follow on with the obsession.
