sign of a failing HD?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Most likely it is a virus, but I'd run a surface scan anyway just to make sure.

@Wolfy,

You should be scanning your HD from the boot-up CD. NOT from a normal HD boot-up. Scanning your HD both with AV first and then with Scandisk.

blimey it's just like being back on the dam phone at work again!

Indy's right, WD, usually if you have background progs running that write to the hdd scandisk will keep restarting. Either run it from boot at the command prompt (scandisk c: /autofix /nosummary /surface) or use task manager to close down everything but explorer and systray, then run scandisk and defrag.

basic stuff this, Wolfy, u gottta get past these sorts of problems or you'll be a computer twonkenhausen for the rest of your life!

i did close EVERYTHING from the task manager
what is an AV......if its a virus sanner i dont have one, i lost it last time my HD failed, and the guy who helped build our computer was the one who installed it in the first place

Did the guy just install them or did he give you the disk for them? You can also check search. Type in Norton and if the EXE file is still there, you can use it, if there isn't, you will need the disk.

Wolfy, do the search for McAfee then and see if the files are still there. Unless you did a go-back type of thing, the files sould still be there.

@Wolfy,

Well, that means you don't have an Anti-virus (AV) program. Since we are assuming that you've got either a virus problem or a messed up o/s problem, you still need to get one... else there's not a heck of a lot any of us can do for you if IS a virus after all. No program disks for the AV progam left with you?

McAfee has a free trial period AV you can download. So does Norton. You might try that. McAfee also offers a web based anti-virus service but I don't know anything more about it. Norton probably does too.

I'm not a big believer in downloading an AV program and installing it on an HD that already is suspected of being infected so maybe that web based service is a better option for you. It'll cost you though.
