boot your pc, when you see in white writing on black "Starting Windows98, verifying DMI pool data" press F8 and that will take you to the boot menu. Choose safe Mode, press enter and if it boots eventually with no blue screens of death but you have "Safe mode" written in each corner, and the display looks crappy, the you ain't got a hd problem, it's software. Come back after you've done that and we'll take it from there.

Last time I looked, W98SE also is supported for security patch updating. This is because there still is a relatively significant number of installaed base of W98SE users. WME also is still supported although much fewer users than W98SE.

If and or when your problems are resolved, the Windows Update feature usually already is in your start menu. If you click on it, it should take you to the ASP site where your rig will get checked out and the site will tell you what's available for download. I would go through the process of downloading all of the updates that MS says are critical. Those would be for both Windows and for IE.

ok cool that means your hd is prob ok, for now.

so as I suspected it's pretty much the o/s, this could well be virus(es) and/or fooked system config files (you been deleting stuff without un-installing properly?)

you need to AV scan your hd now pref from boot then from the os, Norton AV cd will do this for you. You also need to clean up your registry and startup so something like Norton Utilities run from the cd will do that for you. then when you've gone through all that, you badly need to scandisk/ndd this drive and defrag/speeddisk it as I'd imagine the fragmentation is nearly 90% hence why its running like a dog with no legs.

We do not abuse people for offering advise on these forums Alcestis, i'll assume that you don't have a problem with that.

There's a third derogatory comment from Alcestis. Why don't you post something constructive to help Wolfy, instead of criticising everyone else?

I agree with Taw, Wolfy. Defrag the your HDD. I do it regularly, and it really does speed things up. The other benefit is that is reduces wear on the HDD and can help it to last longer.

annnyyywwaaayy back to Wolfy. where do we stand now with the Wolfstern Demonital hd situation? you can defrag in safe mode you know, and scandisk will sort out file and directory structure for 98 in safe mode and repair bad clusters etc. But stuff like scanreg or NU wont work terribly well.

i really need to get me hands on the dam thing, online support is b*ll*x evn though young Wolfy you have at least 4 IT professionals helping you out on this!

Yeah, online/telephone diagnoses are always difficult. Believe me, I know. Especially when the person you are helping can't speak english very well (which is often for me). Luckily Wolfy can (most of the time ). Hands-on is definately the way to go. How about emailing your HDD to us Wolfy?
