as printers they're no better or worse than anyone elses, some models are a bit fonk and prone to breakages, the drivers are solid enough though other than that internet printing b*ll*x that never works. it's the price of the replacement cartridges/toner and the atrocious UK technical support that gets me; but then they're almost all like that now

Well for me, when I was at Melbourne Uni, I had to do some voluntary work as part of a History subject. I worked at the "Royal Australasian College of Surgeons" for two weeks, and I had to print a few hundred colour scans of documents from the National Archives. The damn Lexmark printer kept chewing up the paper, distorting the images, shutting itself off for no apparent reason, and all this happened AFTER the techs spent four hours trying to get it to appear on the network! I have also had other problems with them in the past.

Out of slight curiosity, is anyone out there still using a Dot-matrix, besides my mom?

That's interesting about Lexmarks being such problems. My wife uses Brother faxes too. Yes, she still uses faxes because some of her clients are rather... um... technophobic. Anyway, those faxes are now 9 years old and neither have had a single problem.

She used to have HP printers. They were HP 4 somethings. She had three on line as networked printers and they were constantly jamming up. They were replaced with Lexmark Optra S 1650N's and she's never looked back. I guess its all a matter of the proper alignment of the sun, moon and stars when you install those things.

an awful lot of businesses still use dot-matrix printers, they're still the only practical way to do multi-part paper. big Tallys, Fujitsus and Okis are standard in most paper invoicing regimes. I'm forever replacing the hammers or gears and untangling ribbons...

Anyway, as I said (or at least I thought I did) engineering and design companies still use old plotters which are dot-matrix. So they are still alive and well.

As for printers Indy, you are right. They are temperamental things at best.

plotter aren't dot-matrix, they're ink pens on x/y armatures. As a former design-engineer I should know, that's how I got into cr*puters in the first place!

Are you sure? I can clearly remember being taught about (and reading about) "old plotters" that used dot-matrix. I can't state which brand though, as the information I received was non-brand specific.

We still use an aweful lot of dot matrix jobbies at work, Olivetti PR50's to be precise and they are the bloody bane of my existence. I don't think I go a day at work without swapping one out. We use them for printing cheques and statements from the mainframe.
