Check the FCC info for particulers, but, Back when I did amateur radio, this subject came up a lot. Most wireless items these days runs higher freq and uses less power. It will take a lot longer for damage to happen ie cancer from the radiation. Hand held radios did more damage than base units as the antenna was next to your head, even at 2 watts. If the items in question were kept off floor and about 5 feet up, the danger should be min.

Example- Some cordless phones are in the 2ghz range now, but are low wattage. Microwave ovens also use radio waves at a highter power. Think what it does to food.

indy, there are frequency ranges that can have the bizarre effect of boiling water over a prolonged period of time....and considering the amount of water in your body, you can imagine that this can cause problems. These ranges are not usually available on the general wireless range, but some mobile phones operate within these frequencies (hence "problems" do occur when using mobile phones for long periods)....I know this as my old technical manager used to be the head honcho at a popular UK phone manufacturer and was forced to leave after making "suggestions that could affect the lifespan of the company". However, I am also aware after applying for hundreds of licenses to operate radio microphones over the years, that it's extreeeemely unlikely that your average every day wireless home network will ever even get near these frequencies. So as far as I'm concerned, I can't see it being a problem for you. In fact I would be so bold to say that if I had kids and a wireless network, the long term effect wouldn't ever cross my mind. The power amplification you'll be using won't be very much anyway.

I'm going to have to dig up some "official" pronouncements, I guess. Leastwise, I'm going to have to come up with some hard facts to show that, for example, if I set the wireless transmitters and receivers at a certain height, it improves the safety margin, etc.

Interesting hearing about boiling water and microwaves with certain frequencies and outputs, but there is also one more undeniable fact ... as a species we are living longer and longer, these things we're afraid of aren't killing us and now we have to make up our own illnesses to add balance back to the world.

actually I e-mailed your wife, Ed, and told her that wireless is fonk and there's nothing like a good old cable. She complained about the potential mess but when I just happened to drop into the conversation "wireless fries your baby's braincells.." she saw my point. So another successful fight against the march of technology! One day computers will once again return to the purview of ustechnicians and you the public wont want to use them because of percieved health risks...roll on that day! no more support calls.

..so get cabling. a nice 300m drum of Cat5e will do the trick, and you can take it back and get a refund on what you don't use. Get some conduit as well

Thanks loads. New tactic is to not talk about it for a while and quietly go about figuring out how I want it set up. Where to put the transmitter, etc. and then see if I can finagle a fait accompli.
