A New Threat to Freelancer? or a new beginning for Modders?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

A New Threat to Freelancer? or a new beginning for Modders?

X2 The Threat has been released to stores recently and i just now find the blasted demo to it. It seems to be a Bigger, Harder, Freelancer with more ships
Fighters,Corvetts,Friagtes,Battleships etc and where freelancer has 40 ships (not counting mods) this one has 70.
Now i don't know if anyone has posted bout it before or not but i want to see what other people think about it. i got the Demo DLing as i type this so i will post truthful what the demo is like.
I personally love freelancer for the privateer 2 Reconing mod (found the game just a bit to easy to beat)
This one will have joystick compatabitly, and will allow you to own more than one ship
from what the PCGamer mag said bout it, it seems to be WC/Priv+Freelancer+Homeworld, Where you could own space stations, fleets, etc
Only thing i dunno on is mutiplayer. Will get back to it soon tho...Dl's done gotta split.

When the Going's get Tough, The Tough get a bigger Battleboat.

Ok that sucked Demo turned out to be nothing more than video clip.. but fromwhat it showed you can.
Build up a sizable Wallet though massive trade system.
Fight out hordes of bandits with your own personal Battleship/navy
Build Your own space station in the middile of no fu*king where
And Think your way though the game's storyline (if there is any)
basically Freelancer With more ships and options (mostly what people wanted for Freelancer 2 is in this)
Threat is Modest

next person to post something like this will get eaten. so what if x2 is different?

Post Mon Feb 02, 2004 3:34 pm

If you want a more difficult mod - try evolutions 1.27. Find that too easy, 1.28 is in beta, and its alot different

Sorry guys, but in the words of, uh, whoever it was...

X2 mops the floor with freelancer.

I don't care how you mod fl, X2 is simply a better game unless you don't like strategy games (wich I do). It's the shooter style fl plus an RTS twist.

I agree with ff, enough is enough.
X2 has a layout that is completly different the fl boht in the ships you control and the playing style. It cant be reasonably compared to freelancer.

Post Mon Feb 02, 2004 7:34 pm

so tell me, is X2 a mod to FL or an entirely differnt game? and what specs do i need?

Post Mon Feb 02, 2004 7:51 pm

X2 is a completly different game. It has the concept that you can own many different ships at once and create your own "fleets" You have your own space station and you manage everything. As for the specs i think you need a pretty good piece of equipment to run it, its at least takes up more then what fl does if im not mistaken.

Actualy, you can have manny space stations which serve as factories and if you plan well thay make gobs and gobs of money for you. Other than that Matt pretty much got it. You can also capture enemy ships, but I suspect there's an element of luck there as some pilots never surrender. For more info and system specs see "Warlord Bob's X2 Help Thread"

It appears the discussion is quite mature so far but I'll be keeping a close eye on it. Keep your criticisms constructive of both games and it'll stay open.

Anyway the two games are very similar in their design but worlds apart in their execution. FL is focused more on storyline and exploration while X2 is focused on trading and building. Let's face it the X2 story is as bland as styrofoam and the cut scenes are some of the ugliests I've seen in a long time. However it's trading system is sensational, it's so rich and vast and a lot more of a challenge than FL ever posed. X2's accesibility is not the greatest, the learning curve is very steep and the training/simulation missions are an absolute must. You have to have a lot of patience to get the most out of this game. In FL you could jump in be making big bucks in no time, the interface is very intuitive. In X2 the interface is a nightmare, you get given a couple of starter missions to get you a few credits and then your on your own and baffled about what to do next. You don't know where to go or what to trade or even how to buy and sell at a profit, you have to learn most of that stuff yourself and it will take you a few hours to get the ball really rolling. Then comes buying stations, which are a constant attention hog, whereby you have to check your buy/sell prices and your stocks to make sure that your station is working at it's best capacity to turn a good profit.

Personally I find all of that stuff a helluva lot of fun but a LOT don't and prefer the instant accesibility of FL. I enjoy both type of games, they both have a lot to offer. X2 is more of an elite type of game, it's very demanding but if you put the effort in, it can also be very rewarding.

Mind you, from what I've heard about X2's combat system, combat is pure luck .

The other thing you have to take into account is, when judging a game, to not take anyone's word as the final judgment. For example, asking Warlord Bob would probably end up with him saying "X2 mops the floor with Freelancer" (Quoted, of course) because he owns it . Meanwhile asking a outsider (like me) would result in me saying " Well, the reviews say *this*,*this* and *this*"

I'd look for someone who knows (and plays still) both games, without any critism towards Freelancer. Unlike someone here *cough* Warlord Bob *cough*(No offence btw, what you said about Freelancer mopping the floor just didn't go well with me). I'd try and get a good opinion, just don't ask any salesmen, they will just try and promote it to make you buy it.

Kupo !

To what Mustang just said: Oh dear, well that sounds quite cool, but pretty frustrating as well. I'm getting the game on Thursday (Thursdays my Birthday, remember that).

Well I think that X2 will also give modders here playing Freelancer a new chance to rip some stuff out...well, technically seen at least...

Don't be afraid of your past, unless its something terrible you've done...

Kinda, you buy a station/factory from a shipyard and hire a huge transporter to move it to a system of your choice. For example if you find an asteroid with a high yield of ore or silicon you would get the transpoter to move it into that system. Or there may be a system with one or no power plants, so you buy a power plant and have it moved there.

That's the easy bit, as you'll notice these business opportunities while you are going about regular business trying to raise enough cash to buy a station. OK once your station is built you will need certain products to get you factory producing goods, in the case of a silicon mine you need to supply it with energy cells. Now you can either collect these yourself or you can buy a transporter, install the correct trading software and command it to purchase the energy cells at best price for you.

Now your mine will start churning out silicon wafers that can be sold to traders around the x universe. However you may find that another mine is under selling you in the same system or a nearby one (pretty easy to tell because no-one is buying your stuff). You can either lower your prices and your profit by under selling the competitor or you can buy another transport to sell your produce to the high paying station in another system.

Eventually you will find a balance, where your transports are purchasing energy cells at a price that keeps production going 24/7 and a price or a transport that will keep your produce going out the door. This should make you a tidy profit with little interference from yourself. Though I always check in on my factories and change prices (if need be) everytime I dock somewhere, you do this by buying a relay navigation satelite (and dropping it in your factories system) and installing trading extention software on your ship. That should give you an idea of how much attention you need to put in.

The other option to making money is to try to capture pirate ships and sell them, pirates do not give up readily though and most of the time prefer to die than surrender. When your starting out you need to be very cautious who you pick fights with to. Combat is very dicky and collisions happen regularly. Actually the combat is pretty crap in the game, so don't be expecting much there.
