Play it again, Sam

What is your favorite song/artist combo from pre-1980. It can be from one you heard on TV, movies, CD/Tape, internet, records for those who have them, or radio. Any category, including Rock, pop, classical, blues, easy listening, bluegrass, international, ballad, country and western but it must have been sung, no instrumental. If possible, list two categories.

Mine are 1. The wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald / Gordon Lightfoot - Ballad
2. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven Rock
3. Boston - More than a feeling can substitute for Stairway.
Edit, Better title

Either Fur Elise by Mozart or Ode to Joy by Beethoven, oh wait is there a time barrier we're not suppose to cross?

Just to have them before 1980. If there is an orchestra you like that played them, then list them too, like the Boston Pops.
Forgive me, but now that I think of it, clasical would not count do to no vocals, however, opera would.

Stairway to Heaven.....NOT

When I was in college, I was a DJ on the school FM station. I had two time slots (they were handed out in 3 hour gigs for a given day of the week). Mine were a Wednesday night slot from 8p to 11p and a Sunday evening slot from 5p to 8p.

The Sunday slot was a request slot. I cannot tell you how many f*&^$#@ requests I got for that song as a tribute to whomever. One night I got a separate requests for it from four morons who were trying to prove their devotion to their respective objets de lust and insisted that I read some horrible drivel about eternal love and immortal kisses before I played the song. Yeesh. After that, I got the station manager to allow me to DENY StH requests outright on some nights and otherwise limit it to one only per show.

But I digress.

In the 20th Century, some not so current things I like "Girl From Ipanema," Stan Getz with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto/ "Take Five," Dave Brubeck/ "Unforgettable," Nat King Cole / "What'd I Say," Ray Charles.

>>Edit>>>Ooooops. Meant to have registered my disapproval of StH.

bah now I can't say Stairway to Heaven..

if we're just talking about pre-80s pop and rock, then Led Zep obv, the Who, Pink Floyd, oh lots of others, and Jeff Wayne's musical version of War of the Worlds, I love that. but going back a bit further, and I really hate to say this cos it means I'm turning into me dad (noooooooooooo!) i like a fair ol bit of jazz and big band sound, like Count Basie, and the Four Freshmen, and Klaus Doldinger.

as far as classical is considered it's Wagner, Shoshtakovich, Stravinsky, Kachaturian, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Britten, Vaughan-Williams, Respighi, Sibelius, Villa-Lobos, and even Monteverdi if y'all wanna go back that far.

edit - sorry I see that classical is out, still there's always someone like John Taverner and his polyphonies, I think his works sheer genius.

Actually I went through a phase in my late teens where I wouldn't listen to anything post 80's so here goes:

The Doors
The Beatles
Deep Purple had a couple of cool tracks
Hendrix, brilliant
Cream were frickin awesome
Creendence Clearwater Revival
Janis Joplin had a few good tunes
Santana, I like his old stuff better
Jefferson Airplane

Oh and Bob Dylan

The Doors - Riders on the Storm
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
BB King - The Thrill Has Gone
Jackie Wilson - The Sweetest Feeling

...the list really could go on and on and on so I think I'd better leave it at 4. Any prog rock, motown, blues, jazz or experimental blows my whistle....in fact, thats the stuff I listen to most nowadays anyway.

And as far as classical's concerned I like Barber, Chopin, Handel and most of the east european composers.

When I saw the title, I thought it was referring to the Woody Allen movie.

Most of the music I listen to is pre-80s, but if I have to pick, then I'll choose: Chicago - You're The Inspiration.

Actually, the title is a tribute to Bogy, Humphry Bogart, in Casablanca in his line to the piano player

Sinatra Man!

I'm starting to get into swing music, some of it is pretty hip.

Well, I was too young back then
Anyway, now I tend to put on some old records. I like Sinatra, but I also listen to some old Russian music, e.g. Kino with Viktor Coi, and Vladimir Vysockyi. however, only on certain occasions and in a certain mood. Pity classical music doesn't count (though there were pieces with vocals too).
