What do you do with old software???

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

What do you do with old software???

Basically, the wife wants me to clear out some badly needed storage space. I've hung-on to most of the software I've gotten over the years. I've got old DOS systems going back to DOS 3.1, I've got some old DOS shells, I've got Windows 3.0 and 3.1 with alternative Windows desktops, stuff like that, oh, and of course old games to play on those old OSes.

I am 50% in the mood to just chuck out the stuff and let someone else ferret through them but I was wondering if there was a kind of elephant's grave yard for software that I can send, donate....maybe even sell them to?

Anyone know of like a charity or something or have any ideas?

nothing

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?

Indy, why not store them somewhere safe, and when your old, decrepit and poor, you can start a museum. In 10 years time non-one will ever believe that 3.5" floppies existed, let alone dos or an earlier version of Windows than XP. You could charge a lot of money showing off these things.

Besides,I myself have a box somehwere in my world fullof the same sorts stuff you have - even the original Lotus Suite and Corel Draw programs, and a load of coverdisks.

IT for charities

if that's no use, I believe that Ebay and Half.com both have giveaway sections for registered charities.

taw you need to stick "www." in front of that link mate.

as for what to do with old disks...it raises an interesting question but with a very simple answer. We work with modern antiques, everything we play on or work on will become extinct in a matter of a couple of years. So the decision whether to keep it or not to hopefully make a profit in the future is entirely yours.

Personally I see it like this...

If its a machine, eg an old acorn, apple, amstrad, ibm, bbc etc, then yes its probably worth boxing up and sticking in your attic. You may be lucky, in 20 years it may be worth something, but on the other hand its probably only gonna be worth a giggle with your friends. But if its software - especially old operating systems (that were popular) such as DOS or win 3.1, just bin it or give it to taw's charity. Its worth nothing to you and will be worth nothing in the future simply due to its popularity at the time....and remember, to be worth something in the future it has to have something interesting about. So for example, if you were hanging on to the boot disks of RISC OS 1.1 from the mid eighties Acorn Archimedes days - THAT could be of interest in the future. Reason? they weren't as popular as they should have been at the time, and they had a lot to offer ahead of their time - in fact many people still say that RISC 1.1 is better than most operating systems of today and should be used as a model. But DOS? Naah, PCs were popular, everyone and his dog has an old 186/286 in a box in the garage, no collector will look at your disks in the future with interest.

So my advice is simple. Its worth nothing now. Its gonna be worth nothing in the future. Hand it over to charity so at least it can do some good....and you'll feel better for it.

put em in a box that says 'sh*tty games', then put it in ur basement

in a couple of years you'll come across this and see a few of the games and say,"this isnt a sh*tty game! why did i put it there?".....then you'll play it for an hour of so and realize why

Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?
