it sounds like the drivers aren't installed properly or something similar

about wireless, i dont know it depends on how they're set up, i use 3 computers in different rooms so wireless is easier

yes it's the drivers, make sure they're correctly loaded.

use a wired connection, it is faster and more reliable with no data crosstalk or interference.

ICS is a pain in the @## and you will be better with a router if you wish to share your net conn. The router will also act as a n/w switch!

Configuring as a network will be harder for you if you have no experience of setting up TCP/IP settings, DNS, hosts and domains. However if all you want to do is simultaneously share a net connection its a lot easier, and many routers don't need much configuring for this, if any.

ok.....i cant afford to get a router at the moment.
The wireless board and adapter work on the two computers...can i connect them, as is without anything else..??
I booked off 3 day from work so i could set this up and hopefully be enjoying myself (HA..!!!..OH THE JOYS OF COMPUTING). i only have sun/mon left now..
when i now connect to the net my computer says that there is a error with the ipx/spx settings or the component cp..?? and that it cannot connect to the other comp (suprise,suprise)
am i going in circles or the right direction...
Any advice appreciated...

what operating system(s) are you using?

Both are running win xp...the older comp has xp over win me.

Why are you using IPX? You should be using TCP/IP. Try uninstalling the IPX protocol under the network settings. That will help to eliminate a possible cause of the problem. Keep IPX if you are using it to play old games or are using Novell. Also check to make sure that you have your IP, subnet mask, and DNS settings set to automatic.

it depends, i just got a few wireless adapters, plugged them in, installed the drivers and it worked

what OS you running? i find Windows 2000 to be the easiest to network

Well i seem to be going in the right direction now....i have been playing games on a 3 computer wireless lan today with no problems,
BUT (is,nt there always a but) i dont seem to be able to get either of the other computers to use my voyager asdl modem through the main computer...
Questions...1 Is it poss for them to use the hardware through the computer as they are (The lan only uses the two wireless cards and a usb adaptor that i have. no switches/routers etc)..?
2..Can a BT Voyager ASDL modem accept more that one computer useing the connection at the same time..
BT and most other suppliers use the same line of "While the connection can accept multiple users we supply no tech help" Sweet..eh!!

I must thank you guys for the info you have given me so far, as its pointed me into the settings i screwed up trying on my own and at least i have a 3 comp lan now...hee hee
But my final goal will be to be able to run a server whilst using another comp to play ..

yes the BT Voyager will accept multiple users but you must get a router, this is the only practical way to share both the LAN and the DSL pipe. We have this query every few weeks now and there are numerous threads in which we go into detail about why this happens (seeing the LAN or the Net but not both) and how to get over it.

there is possibly in your case however an issue in that BT Openworld only supply a limited number of permissions for IP addresses, but your Uncle Taw can get round that for you as Mrs. Taw works for BT when she's not fookin Ebaying.

You need your IP address that BT have assigned to you for their domain, the domain itself should be btinternet.com, but check on this. Once you have these 2 pieces of information then regardless of o/s we can start cooking on gas.

Ok...from the details i can see on my comp my ip is 217.44.152.199
The e-mail adderss is @btbroadband.com so would that be the domain ??
I also have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 but i think that is for the lan..??
If i must buy the router does anybody know where a cheap wireless router can be bought....in the uk please..

well as of 2330 GMT i now have both comps online togeather...HORAY !!
i finally bought a router and it all became easy....But it still cost and i had to settle for what my budget allowed rather than get what i wanted..eg a 54g router..not to worry they will come within reach soon enough..hee hee

Advice to anybody thinking of setting up a network is to seriously talk to people who know what they are doing or read up on it...its a minefield if your not carefull.
