@ archie, thing is you cant get into heaven through your own actions, you need to accept god into your life and let him work through you.

what? thats bollocks. and what exactly does that MEAN anyway? let god into your life? isnt that just live by the teachings of the bible? in which case, live a good life?

no archie, as i said its a lot more complicated.

this is the bit I can never understand. All those people who were around before J.C. and those who lived in Asia, the Americas and other areas where christianity did not reach for hundreds of years, were all condemned to hell regardless of how good a life they led?!
I agree with Arcon™, religion and its stories are guidelines for society. Science has shown us that the bible is literally untrue in places, that does not mean it ceases to hold a powerful and truthful message in how we should live our lives in regard to treating ourselves and each other, merely that while the bible was being put together, people did not yet know quite so much as to how the world worked. I wish the fundamentalists could see that perhaps God (if he exists) made the universe all those billions of years ago, that he created the rules of physics by which everything applies and that he doesn't go round controlling every single action in the universe, that perhaps the guys who wrote the bible were wrong (ie they were human and were not completely infallible).

No ff, its vague . If you cant write in plan english what your on about then i think your trying to explain something you dont understand but have blind faith in nonetheless.

Res is right. Whoever wrote the Bible, it was Man. Man makes stuff up as he goes, he interperates things, he makes assumptions, he generalises. Hell, its not even that good a story. Regardless, theres simple science missing which points heavily that its a collection of fiction with the purpose of providing structure to mankind when it was written. I dont resent people for following the teachings in the bible, but i do think that talking about "letting god into your life and letting him work through you" is just a way of saying "live by these guidelines and you'll be allright". Tarting it up is just making it sound more pretentious and bollocks, i think.

@Griff: I think that some people are good, and some just a prick in the @$$, and religion has nothing to do with this - it's merely a mask they wear.
@Stinger: cool, I'm beginning to like winter games!

I can't believe I'm saying this but Griffon has actually earned my respect with this post

No arcon, its NOT about doing good things, its about loving god and letting him direct you though life. The bible isn't the only means of communication with God, nor is it the most important thing.

See Arcon, this is where you get it wrong. Doing good is great but is secondary to having a passion for Christ. Religion being a guidline for society is what some christians have MADE it. But there were always christians like that, remember the pharisees

You mean Arcon, you'd never watch a movie or show where someone is killed, someone swears, where gay people are on etc, you'd never hate anyone in your life?

In any case this is the most. religious. thread. evar.

Alright, this is getting personal. I'm clicking this as soon as I have installed a lightning guard (don't want to suffer Jim Caviezel's fate). Nice discussion folks, but we knew this was a hot topic.
