Computer Use Policies

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Final - Yes, but if a person were using their company's internet connection, then they would probably still have issues with the admins.

Taw - Novell rocks! Good ole Console One . Still, I dislike the fact that it is written in Java, I know why, but it is too slow in my opinion.

Esq - Nope, the computers at home. Too much noise trying at work. There is less stress this way too. Gromit - About 1 and a half years ago, I was in your position. 9 years 6 months with the company and they were driving me crasy. I gave my notice and took a job that had a $3.50 an hour cut just to get out. 4 months later, I found a better one at my old rate. I do not know your family stuation, wife? kids? if this is posible for you. Just a thought.

Grom, 2 questions- How much do you contribute to the company? if you have enough moneymaking power within the company you can just threaten them with dismissal if you dont get your way.
Q2- You wouldnt be able to post or e-mail me a copy of the use policies would you? i have an uncle who is a solicitor so i might be able to get him to find a loophole.

Good luck

You might try this place One of 2500 sites i found on google, looks reputable

@final its good to hear it worked out well for you. I'm debating a similar thing, only problem is that I've just recently bought a house so now I have a mortgage to worry about. I've seen plenty of positions that I can do but aren't in web design, I'm just not sure whether to take the leap or not. If I can't get back into design when I leave it could be the biggest regret of my life.

@arania my work pulls a lot of weight....I'd say that I'm responsible for about a good quarter of the money that the company receives. But threatening to quit is a dangerous game...I'd rather be set up with a job to go to before even mentioning the word quit. This company doesn't know when its on to a good thing - it has no quarms about letting people go and replacing them as cheaply as possible. I've seen some awesome designers come and go, some of the best I've ever seen, and they let them just walk out of the door because they can't stand humility. Unbelievable.

Thanks for the link by the way, only problem is that they're in glasgow and i'm in kent, some commute I've actually sent a CV to ever design firm in kent worth its salt, I just have to wait now for a position to become open.....easier said than done!!

@Grom,

Since your boss seems to be more along the lines of a Sturmbahnfuherer, don't threaten to quit unless you've got yourself situated so that you can deliver on the threat. Otherwise, he'll own you after he calls your bluff.

Yeesh. You're a home owner eh? That kind of sticks you with it unless, short term, you're willing to do the 1.5 hr. commute to London. Can you stomache it? Folks here in New York commute up to 2 hours one way so I don't know what this means for you.

Might be a good option in as much as networking in London may lead you back out to a job in design closer to home. The London shops have the broader client bases, I bet.

Often times, there is the client in Kent that uses the London shop and is afraid to got outside of London without prior acquaintance and knowledge of the talent involved.

@final I used to telecomute for a previous employer (the company was 3 hours drive away), it worked really well but unfortunately my current employer won't have any of it. He's the kind of person who invites you to the pub and then asks you to buy the drinks.

@indy london definitely is my one and only option of a quick leave. Unfortunately so far though I've been turned down by three companies in advance of an interview simply because THEY don't want to employ anyone that far away....previous bad experiences etc. My situation really sucks...I used to work for the top 50 companies, some really tasty clients, I really was at the top of my game.... and now I'm stuck in a situation where I can't move at all.

Ho hum

however my mood has changed somewhat since I originally posted this thread. I'm still in the same situation yes, and I still hate it, but I can't let it get on top of me - I'm afraid that as soon as I get angry and spiteful it will come across in my mood and quosh my chances in any decent interviews. I'm confident that my work will get me into any top company if I can just get it seen....so all my efforts are now going into that....

Thanks for the advice guys...you've all been stars as usual.

things must be grim down south if experienced webkn*bs can't get jobs. what's up, are the Albanian "asylum-seekers" filling all the available vacancies? Come back up north, grommers! You know you want to...

Post Mon Jan 26, 2004 9:55 am

lol. don't even tempt me ....unfortunately my missus holds the magic key to the north and somehow I don't think I'll be getting my hands on it for a while...

...unless I bump off her family anyway, MUUUWWAAHAHAAAA

Disclaimer: If any of missus' family die as a result of hideous, unusual or otherwise uncharacteristic accidents, may I point out that all of the comments above were made in jest and I am in no way responsible....(muuuwwahahaa )

@Grom

Good luck to you then.

Following on what Fd said, though, some folks here check into work in NYC 1 to 2 days out of the week and then work from home the rest of the time. You might
sell it as an advantage to the London shops by pointing out how you could be the local connection for the Kent client list. Of course, they'll probably need assurances like a very tight non-compete agreement, etc. but you might put all of that on the table for, say a 3 year commitment or something?

Post Mon Jan 26, 2004 10:18 am

Thats a nice idea indy - in fact exactly what I did with my last company. I worked for them for a year in their offices, built a team, then convinced them that I could work just as efficiently from home. Ran the team for 2 years from my spare room....along with the occasional 3 hour drive to check they weren't all skiving anyway

Thanks for that...I'll bare it mind when I'm hunting...

I'm always impressed by just how good Ed is at this sort of stuff!

btw Grom just as a comparison, how much are support techs (like me) earning on average down your way now?

Post Mon Jan 26, 2004 12:01 pm

Aw shucks.

But I note that Grom'd already thunk it some time in the past. I just tickled one of his memory cells for him.

Post Tue Jan 27, 2004 2:36 am

@taw average system admin pulls in between £29K-£35K....but the poor sod at our place is on £21K....not surprisingly he went for an interview yesterday

@indy that tickles, get off!
