Crappy Games

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Crappy Games

Recently my dad spotted this game in Dixons. A game by the name of 'Marine Sharpshooter'. Now my dad, along with myself, likes FPS, which has been well demonstrated thanks to Call of Duty. Anyway, back to 'Marine Sharpshooter'. My dad decided that he wanted this game. I advised that I check out some reviews of the thing. My dad agreed, so we returned home. I booted up the net, and started looking. After about 15 minuites, I detirmined that the game was a bit crappy. I went to report this to my dad, only to find that he had slipped out. When he returned, my worst suspicions were confirmed. He had bought the game. Picture this: You've installed the game, load it up, and click on new game. When you get control, the screen is pitch black. The Hud you can see, but the screen is black. A hurried search of the manual finds the night-vision mode. It had to be hurried because we are running around in the darkness, being shot at, while an annoying rock-mix-thing plays in the background. So, we've got night vision. We take out our enemies, each with one shot. Not because we are particuarly good shots, but because whereever you shoot your enemy, they die. I'm not a doctor, but being shot in the finger does not suggest instant death to me. Having disposed of our opponents, we go to check our objectives. Which brings me to my next minor critism of the game. There is no objective indicator. No method, in fact, to find out what your objecive is. At this point, I give my dad the one good point about the game.

Yup, thankfully I read the review of this game before I was ever inclined to buy it.....they gave it about...20/100...it got the twenty because as they said it "will not give you cancer"

Hahahaha, seriously , all the work that when you consider gets poured into a game and it turns out to be a piece of crap.......

the way i found around this is.... like many people my motto for games is "theres no time in life for mediocrity" now.... i wait until a game has some sufficient reviews before i really buy it, this way im sure its at least good somewhat. There are some games which are exceptions, games i know are good, these exceptions are The Grand Theft Auto Series, Halo, Any Blizzard Game, so there you got my view, i wait for the reviews to roll in and buy games which are..... good, AT LEAST.... which is cool since instead of buying games in huge quantities and having most of them suck.... I have gathered a impressive collection of great games problem is..... so many games so little time

You've still gotta be a little wary about some PC game mag reviews. I went out and bought Unreal 2, based upon the rave review from the UK PC Zone magazine. It later turned out that they had been so desperate to get the exclusive on the review that they had based their review on a special demonstration of the game by Epic. Every other review I saw was different and bang on. It's still a good game, but there's plenty of flaws too. I won't buy PC Zone ever again. At least with PC Gamer, they wait till they have the production version of the game and test it on multiple gaming rigs.
EDIT: btw I love your new sig Aceaz!

Don't you just love tutorials?

For me a game needs one of these two things.

1) A good tutorial.
2) Easy to understand controls.

If there's a crappy tutorial, there should be logical controls and easy to customize heymappings.
If the controls are unlogical or need some time getting used to, a good tutorial is a must.

Without these things I can't be bothered to play the game.

Edit: Damn spelling.

i find im surprised when i find a game that i do like these days ive lost count haw many bad ones ive bought over the years
and i never trust the reviews these days EVER

me neither. word of mouth from like-minded gamers is the only realitic option, you simply can't trust reviews to be impartial. that also goes for the ones they say are cr*p, I've played many a game that got a slating and actually enjoyed it.

I think Gamefaqs has some pretty decent reviews by other gamers, i usually base my game-buyingness on those.

I find the solution in buying not many games, but only the ones that I really want based on what it offers (gameplay wise), not what the game mags/ previews say. For instance I wanted a space game like Elite. Then freelancer came, but it was not it, thankfully I still enjoyed it. Then X2 came, so I got that, and I liked it as a successor to Elite. I wanted a WW2 game, and MOHAA came out, so I got it, which is great for MP. Then I wanted a game where you could drive a stuka and shoot up tanks...then BF1942 came out, with that, and more, so I got it, and that was cool. Then I wanted a game where you had more of a team and had scenes similar to the Mohaa Omaha beach scene. Then, Call of Duty came out so I got that, and its awesome. Then I wanted to fly so I got MSFS2002 and Lock On. Then because I liked HW1 I got HW2. I only buy games that I wanted, not just because IT GOT 90/100 AND IT LOOKS F******** COOL@!>!>@#
I got lots of other games, but thats because I got them off my friends, or bought them ch33p.

I read as many reviews as possible when considering games, and only on one occasion have I been mistaken and picked up a bad game. I think that reviews are very important, as they allow people to form opinions based upon facts, rather than upon screenshots and trailers. Demos are quite useful in allowing people to "try before they buy" though.

I tend to read the reviews as well before i get a game. In my mind there's only been four really good games that i played on last year. GTA Vice City, StarFleet Command 3, C&C Generals and Delta Force Black Hawk Down.

A game FPS that was easy from the get go was Starwars JediKnight II: Jedi Outcast. No trouble with the controls. And there is the book for it for details. The other being Star Trek Armada II in the free lance mode. Controls are very easy and you can increase the difficulty of it.

The Crappy game to goes to "War Craft III"Too linear with no room to freelance like it's predecessors.

DF:BHD was the one I had in mine in my post above. It was panned by most reviewers, and it does have some problems, but its not the duffer its claimed to be. it's often as if the reviewers play one level and a bit of MP then chuck it. and its actually not arf bad once you get into, imho. That happens a lot these days. C&C Generals got lukewarm reviews in many quarters but I thought it was ace fun. Skirmish mode helps prolong the fun and the extra maps for the same. A lot of people panned FL and still do, but I played it for 6 months solid to the total exclusion of everything else!

However it is particularly annoying when you get a game based on someone's glowing resume and its fonk. Much as I hate to p*ss off the Sorcery rpg fans, I put Neverwinter Nights in that category. I'm not a big fan of rpgs of that genre, but I really enjoyed Diablo's 1 & 2 a lot. I was informed that if I liked Diablo I'd love NWN.. except I didnt. I hated it. I just found it pointless, and very unsatisfying. Just my poinion, it did look and feel like a quality game I've got to admit. But I felt cheated out me cash. there was nothing to do most of the time.

Esquilax - that one occaision wouldn't happen to be X2 The Threat would it???? *shakes fist* because X2 is a good game at heart and does everything it promised to do, just let down in some ways by being slow to start and hard to control (joystick sensitivity fixed with the patch though)

Gee Griff, getting a bit paranoid aren't we? Not everything relates to X2 you know. *Mental note* Damn he got me, and I was trying to be subtle too...
