White noise

Anyone know where I can download some free tracks of white noise to help me sleep? tried googling it, but could only find cds for sale, and I'm not gonna pay 15 bucks and shipping cost for sound of rain. Some suggested fans, aquarium with air-bubbler, etc but I have none of those.

if you just want to sleep, just turn your alarm clock radio on and tune down to the bottom end of Short Wave and enjoy the peaceful hiss of the Heaviside layer, provided by Mother Nature's bounty.

What the hell is white noise? Do you mean listening to snow or something?
Why don't you try out some of that new age stuff. That'll ocme close to white noise I think. All I know is that I don't sell it (Music Store)

And one last minor thingie: Don't download your music Buy it.

No, Wiz, white noise is not a band, although it woud make a cool name for a band . It's those irregular, constant sound that happens in the background ie rain, thunderstorms, ocean waves, etc., and I have been known to sleep well when it rains heavily. I respect music artists, but I don't think God (only if you're religious ) would mind if I listen the recordings of his natural occurrences. And I'm not talking about ripping off those white noise cds either - I'm just saying I don't need a professionally produced recordings of ocean waves - if you know a generous fella who happens to make his own recordings in his garage and willing to contribute it for free .

well...it would be hard to get the ocean to come do a recording in your garage studio...

speaking of tuning to the end of radio frequencies, what is the constant beeping you sometimes get?

Post Sat Jan 03, 2004 4:39 pm

Insomnia, eh? Try some Valerian, or Camomile tea. They are quite good. I have heard that Valerian can be addictive, however if don't go crazy with it, you should be ok. Camomile is a good sedative, and is non-addictive. I do not know how effective it is though.

White Noise.... at least here in NYC, white noise originally was associated with the hum of fluroescent lighting, air conditioning rumble and vent hiss, muted street sounds and the like. White noise was intended to mean background noise which only becomes noticed when it stops. Some sly b*st%@ds discovered that office worker efficiency degraded the more absolutely quiet it became. That there was a need for a certain steady level of low level decibels to help keep the work force focused.

@FF: Well, if you're really opposed to paying the big boys for it, how about buying the sounds from those wildlife organizations? You know, rain forest huggers, whale blubberers, etc., etc.

Tawakalna's right, a clock radio set to AM at the low frequencies is good for insomniacs, as is subtle music, like classical guitar (personal cure for insomnia - pink floyd's the wall ). as for drugs, try cold and flu tablets for night. theyve got antihistamines in them, which helps you sleep. i dont know if its addictive or not though.

edit: another thing to try is a small fountain. you should be able to pick one up for a small cost.

anyways, good luck with you struggle for sleep!

Fear Factor:

Tried looking for you, found this

Noise Generator

Try this, read what they wrote too.

Mr Bush are those trailors you found really a threat?

Well, we were looking around, and in the gas tank, we found a highly flamable substance.

You mean gas???

Yeah, and get this Coney, while we were inside the trailor...We found an empty jar of....mustard...

Mustard?? So? What's Your Point??

Well...unless I'm an idiot....those are the two main ingredients in mustard gas.

@FF

Well, here's something for free. It's not 100% what you asked for but it has ocean sounds

@Para

Hey....where'd you get that sig? I really am interested in finding more stuff like that... assuming that it is a genuine quote.

White noise??? Thats a sedative that dentists use to reduce pain.
OK trying to figure out an old cure against insomnia,........

Got it, Meditation, Meditation is an ancient cure against insomnia,

Just lie in your bed, close your eyes, and concentrate on the beats of your heart,
Steadily as you monitor the beats let them slow down a bit, Breath nose in, mouth out.
then concentrate less on your beatings and more on nothing, stay focussed but focus at nothing, at a point in the room for instance, don't let your focus slip.

If all works out you will be asleep like in no time.

@Esquilax & jake: I am using drugs to sleep nowadays. I'm very close to substance abuse, and alcohol abuse to a lesser extent. And that freaks me out (one more reason to disturb my sleep) that's why I'm trying to find an alternative method.

@Indy: I'm not against the big boys - I'm quite a capitalist I'm just a cheapskate . If either treehuggers or big boys would give me a cd for free, I'd ask for two cds.

@Taw, Parabolix, & Indy: thx for the links. I found that link myself shortly afterwards, Taw, and it did help a bit but not enough. Parabolix, I'll try yours later tonight.

@RILMS: because I currently reside in the northern hemisphere, and coriolis law screws up my fans making them rotating the wrong way - we tossed all the fans out

@Locutus: remind me not to see your dentist. I need something stronger than white noise for sedation .

If you want white noise then just leave your computer running on during the night if it's in the same room, the fans in there should produce enough.
