Bundaberg Ginger Beer is the best! I wish I had some right now!!! Oh well, I'll have to stick with this home-made lemonade. Mmm, it's not bad...I wish I had some fresh ginger to add to it. It's a killer combination, but not for the weak of heart .

wow fresh ginger and lemonade sounds funky! how do you cut the ginger? into slices? across the grain or along the grain? I bet it gives a right kick (thinks vodka, lemonade, fresh ginger **mmmm**)

Ah, that would be telling Benevolent Leader ! Still, one of the best ways of preparing ginger is to peel it, and then either slice it or grate it finely. You can slice it anyway you like, but if you grate it, make sure that the root is frozen. That way, you avoid being left with a large amount of tough fibres. After that, boil it up with your lemon rind, etc, or just throw it into your drink. It's one fine (if spicy) drink. As for vodka, I don't drink, but I have heard that there is actually an alcholic drink made from ginger. Mmm, makes me wish I did drink. Oh well .

Is there a difference between ginger beer and ginger ale and what is that difference if there is one?

PS: Jake - Gin = genever = Dutch word for liquor made with juniper berry as the main flavoring ingredient.

PPS: Jake - Vodka is made with any source of starch that can be fermented and then distilled. Many prefer potato based vodkas but there also is a very strong and loyal following of rye vodka drinkers as well.

There is a myriad of custom "hand made" brews now, many purposely made to be had chilled. Only way I am able to enjoy it is in a traditional setting but I do like it when I am in a traditional setting.

Jake, thanks. I knew about the potatoes and vodka, but not about gin. Makes sense now that I think about it. As for taking up drinking, it ain't gonna happen . Still, I'll bear that in mind.

Indy - There's all the difference in the world! Ginger ale is a standard soft drink, ie. carbonated water, caramel colouring, and flavouring. It is primarily used as a mixer (obviously), and there could be legitimate "ginger ales" (ie. alcoholic), but I have never come across them. Ginger beer (the real stuff) is created from fresh ginger, yeast, and sugar. Despite having yeast and sugar, it is non-alcoholic and is bloody fantastic stuff. Buy some today!

Apparently, there is a drink called a "Dark & Stormy", that is supposed to be a mixture of ginger beer and rum. Sounds good even to me! Anyone tried it?

Anyone ever tried Green Sands? apparently it's an Indonesian brand. Less than 1% alcohol, tastes like a mix between Sprite, beer, with a touch of apple juice (oh God, I sound like a soda snob ). And since I live in Holland, I found something tasted similar to it, marketed under the name Royal Club Shandy. Simply delicious.

Why? Everybody (with a few exceptions obviously ) drinks alcohol so there is common ground to explore, and I'm a fascinating conversationalist!

That "Green Sands" stuff sounds really interesting. Wasn't there supposed to be a beer made out of soy or something?
