At last, I did it...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

At last, I did it...

I have just finished building my new PC, its great, really quick, runs cool (for an AMD). Just one thing bugs me, the 7 case fans are quiet, but the Thermaltake Volcano 11 on the CPU is the most noisy thing on earth, damn thing sounds like a Hoover.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for an efficient and QUIET heat sink and fan combo.

This is the system (for compatibility).

Thermaltake Xaser III V2000+ Aluminium Super Tower
Gigabyte 7N400-Pro2 motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton CPU
Thermaltake Volcano 11 Heatsink/fan
Corsair TWINX1024-4000PRO ram
Seagate 160Gb SATA primary hard drive
Seagate 80Gb SATA secondary hard drive
Sony CD-RW drive
Sony DVD-ROM drive
Sony 3½" floppy drive
Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT 256Mb DDR AGP DVI/TVO graphics card
Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy LS PCI 24-bit 5.1 sound card
D-Link 56K Modem
BT Voyager 100 ADSL Modem
LG L1811S 18" TFT monitor
Cambridge Soundworks/Creative Labs 5.1 speakers
Microsoft Multimedia keyboard
Microsoft Trackball Optical
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

@Eagle, ff has a thread about heat sinks, maybe there's something there for you. is this going to far for a heat sink?

BTW, you're in another play of mine Reynet the Prince of Starfyre.

Sir Spectre

From the play Reynet: The Prince of Starfyre:

Reynet: To be, or not to be: that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the spams and emails of outrageous Microsoftia fortune, or to take arms against a sea of lawyers. And by opposing, end them? To die: to sleep; to log off; no more; and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that circuit board is err to, 'tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep; to sleep, perchance to dream: aye, there's the rub; for in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this Lancer coil, must give us pause. There's the respect that makes calamity of so long work; for who would bare the copies and scams of thieves? The pangs of despised love, the law's delay, the insolence of office and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes? To grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after legal action? The undiscovered country from whose work is bourn no traveler returns, puzzles the will and makes us rather bare those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all; and thus the native hue of resolution is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought, and enterprises of great pith and moment with this regard their currents turn awry, and lose the name of action!

Thanks SS, if you could e-mail me the latest instalment of your career as TLR Playwright, I would gladly read it. As for that ‘thing’ ff has posted about, I was thinking along the lines of a radial fan, as they supposedly cut down the noise a bit.

But hey, I am open to suggestions of all sorts.

Wow. I never knew that a cpu heatsink fan would out-noise the other cooler fans in a PC.

Umm. What's so special about Volcano (seems aptly named ) that it throws out so much sound?

Post Fri Dec 19, 2003 12:00 pm

Oh yeah, some fans and heatsinks run at up to and exceeding 57db. That's like a jet engine! Well, that's hyperbole of course, but you get the idea.

Indy - The Volcano has a small, high RPM fan - that's why it creates so much noise. A large slower RPM fan moves more air, and thus is much quieter.

[FU38_Eagle - See the Zalman heatsink that I recommend to SS in the "Computer Systems" Thread. It's very efficient, and very quiet.

@esquilax, the Thermaltake Volcano 11 isn’t a small fan, it’s an 80mm like most, it just moves a MASSIVE 75 cubic feet per minute of air, which is why I have an overclocked AMD 3200+ running at 48 degrees Centigrade under load. It’s just too damn noisy, and the chip will be OK running at 60.

I will have a look at the Zalman though, I havn't come across them before.

@Esq:

Wow. Frostytech really likes those units. Interesting that they seem to be the only ones interested in low noise in combination with pretty decent cooling. Did you see that explanation behind the brand name? It's some kind of fusion of Korean with English. It means "good man"

Post Sat Dec 20, 2003 5:07 am

No I didn't Indy. It doesn't surprise me though, people will name a product literally anything in order to sell it.

Eagle - I meant a small fan comparatively speaking. Eg. 80mm versus a 120mm fan. Sorry about that. By the way, Zalman make great stuff. PSU's, waterblocks etc, it is all of good quality.

those Zalman coolers are really good, but I'm an Akasa man myself. Just my preference.

Post Sun Dec 21, 2003 12:26 am

I have heard that Akasa are good, and those new Swiftech coolers are also supposed to be very nice. Of course, I have access to few CPU coolers down here is Australia.

put your tower under your desk and play some music when you're word processing. You'll get used to it. You can get used to anything if you're forced to. --- VH16

I once had a noisy PC. I still do, only now I have a second noisier PC so it doesn't seem so bad
