what rubbish. where I work everyone KNOWS Saddam is our company secretary, Steve Whitehouse, although I suspect there may be a body-double in the Zarka kebab shop in Shelton. Saddam in Iraq, well really, he's been living in Bradford with Osama for months.

(you think I'm joking? go to Bradford and u'll see a dozen Saddams and Osamas in under an hour - some in combat fatigues)

somewhat more seriously: I never thought Saddam would stay on the run indefinitely, the fact that Uday and Qusay were killed in the circumstances that they were, demonstrated how vulnerable the survivors of the regime were/are. The question remains, will this and the subsequent war-crimes/human rights trial stop the Iraqi resistance? i think you'll find that the resistance will continue with Mr bin Laden's assistance, in largely the form that's still continuing in Afghanistan. While this seems like a hugelyt important moment, I don't think in practice it will change very much, I'm afraid.

I know that he probably knew how his sons ended up, but I'm still surprised that there wasn't a single shot fired. I thought he wouldn't be resolute to standing trial for warcrimes and his mass executions. They said he was even talkative and did say who he was.

a lot of commentators have been making comparisons between Saddam's capture and the what if? Hitler had been captured instead of committing suicide. interesting point but other than them being brutal dictators and mass murderers, the comparison ends. Hitler was still surrounded by his loyalists in his HQ and even though his Reich was nothing more than a few city blocks, still held control of what was his. Saddam was on the run and in hiding, an man in his 60s who'd spent the last 3 decades in luxury, who couldn't face the reality of what had happened to him.

Unlike bin Laden who is used to a life of hardship, hence why he's substantially harder to find, and a much greater threat than Saddam ever was.

Any trial will I'm afraid probably be a show trial, for symbolic and propaganda purposes. And it will do nothing to stop the anti-coalition forces who's motivation is other than loyalty to Saddam, despite what Bremer has just been crowing on tv. And what's this "we?" I didn't see Bremer in his Armani suit leading the raid.

ok I'm totally bored with Saddam now. I'm goging to watch FotR and TT in preparation for the highlight of my week, RotK 10am Wednesday, I've booked a day off work to go.

If Saddam gets tried in iraq though, he will face a more painful public exectution than we could have devised. Worse thing too is that he would be surrounded by his own people who would be happy about this. He would feel totally abandoned, alone, unliked and unwanted.........and in lots of pain. It sounds pretty good to me.

I think they would have to guard Saddam very carefully will they ever be intent to bring him on trial, the slightest Oppertunity that will present himself, be it in either Iraq or somewhere else, *BANG* He is caught and executed, before they can blink with their eyes, Personally I hope they let him suffer!
