is that like the pop idol/american idol thing thats going on?

the first few weeks are always the best...loads of fruitcakes apply...its hilarious, yet at the same time it makes me feel reeeeaaallly bad - laughing at some of the uk contestants is almost like laughing at a group of disabled people.

We had some nice fruitcakes in Holland aswell. Great to hear them sing Beautifull by Shakira. They edited like 30 contestants in that song. and you can realy hear the differance between Shakira and the others. That was hilarious.

We had one Canadian Idol. It was diffrent then the American version as it's one contestant from each provance. Unfortunaly Quebec didn't win, but she did very well.

i will refrain from saying much other than the only time ive enjoyed watching one of these shows is at the audition stage that was one of the funniest moments in tv in recent years

Idols, Pop Idol, American Idol, Idolen or Deutschland sucht ein superstar... All fabricated music... Where's the real music, made by passionate people who actually have something to say? Bands like U2 and not those boybands :S

But yeah, it's all fabricated, but who cares. I enjoyed it and some of the contestants actually sing quite good. It's just that this Idols thing overshadows them. Except with Roger.

To explain for the "Foreigners" (): Roger was an Idols Finalist in Holland, but forfeitted(sp?) (is this the right word for this?) as he didn't agree with the terms of the contract all finalists had to sign.
So he banked out to reamerge some weeks later with his band Intwine and this awsome rock"balad" Happy. They reached #3 if I remember correctly and made a few more songs wich I believe all reached top ten positions. 3 or 4 in total now, wich is better then any one of the idols finalists.

Quite impressive. And nobody links him directly with Idols anymore, wich is good for his carreer.

The Idols is interesting.

It produces it's own product. It makes money off of having contestents on the show, and then it produces people ready for the music industry, who are under the same lable that owns the show. It's a self fulfilling profecy.

Australian Idol just finished up and Im actually really pleased with the finalist. The guy (funnily enough his name is Guy) is a real muso, writes his own music, teaches singing, arranged a lot of his own songs on the show and has a helluva voice.
Usually I don't like reality shows but I didn't mind Idol cause it makes people famous for having a talent. Rather than something like Big Brother that makes Bob from finance famous because he lived in a house full of cameras for 5 weeks.

Puh-leeeeeez Gentlemen.

You have got to be kidding me. You actually watch that thing?

In the American version, there's the poncey judge who (no offense inended) Brits it up for the local yokels and really tears into the clearly deluded and untalented thus appealing to the *drum roll....rim shot* schadenfreude in all of us. There's the personally talented AND lucky to have made it judge who is a terribly poor judge of talent giving feel good comments to pretty much everyone. And you have the show's producers who have turned their own jobs of spotting talent into a money making show while having the viewing audience do their work for them.

It's a mixture of Jerry Springer with the old Ted Mack Amateur hour.

Keep in mind that everyone knew in advance what they were getting themselfes into.
The judges were only bad/telling the thruth to the ones who sucked beyond believe. It's amazing to see how manny crazy people out there actually think they can sing, while clearly they cannot. The ones that can sing but lack the performance are being told just that, wich is not so bad.
Sure, it's a big dissapointment to be turned down, but it has to happen someday. It's their own responsibility to pick such a show to do it.
I only feal for the ones who were encouraged/mildy forced to join in. They are being pushed by parents who wanna make a buck or two through their kids. Thats horrible and I offend to thnat greatly.

For the rest of it, yes it is a form of schadenfreude (whats the English word?) but it's nothing else then Americans Funniest homevideo's. And I think compared to that, Idols is not so bad.
Especially because it's not hosted by that terrible Bob Sagget.
