My slowest d/l speed I have encountered sofar is 600 kbps, the fastest being 3400 Kbps

I generally get 70mbps but sometimes I get 125mbps.

Anyone care to give me any advice between cable and ADSL? I have ADSL and I am not all that happy with it but, when it was offered, it came in cheaper than cable. Now both seem to be within a dollar or two of each other.

The other reason I avoided cable is that I had read that cable service would slow
down as enrollments went up..... Any truth to that?

I'm with RILMS. DSL. Even with that tho, I only get around 150 kb/s

Yup.

As for DSL, the way I understand it, the closer you are to the DSL distribution station the faster your connection, the father you are away, the slower. So if you are in the country side you may not get any better than a dial-up. But if you are right next to the distribution station (like I was at work) you get speeds faster than ISDN or cable.

A in ADSL stands for Asynchronous because you download more than you upload, just like on an ordinary dial-up. that's why it suits home users best. because it uses the existing phone network which is largely copper wire technology still there is a steep degradation of signal so line-boosters have to keep the gain up. thats why u can (like me) see ur DSL enabled exchage from where u live but be classed as being out of range! thats why i chose cable broadband - optical fibre. also the contention ratio on cable is guaranteed to never be more than 20:1, wheras BT ADSL is 50:1 and the bandwidth is less anyway. my wife wanted to sign us up with BT ADSL for £19 per month at 150k at a 50:1 contention - no ta luv i'll stick with me modem thanks. then i went out and got NTL 600k contention 20:1 for 29-99, spks for itself doesn't it?

drawback on cable; the pipe is always shared with folks tv signals so u can get some chogging at peak times. also they have to do a lot of engineering work on the infrastructure because NTL inherited ours from x number of previous companies, so there's a fair bit of outage still.

I was on a simple dial-up connection too, but I changed to ADSL with a speed of 256kbps, wich later changed into 384kbps.
My usual d/l speed is at about 20-30kbps, but I encountered an MS d/l server and had to share this with you.

Glad to see the most of you are only worried when you reach a d/l speed of my top speed

100Mbps would be the connection between your network card and your cable modem, from there on in your bandwidth is at the mercy of your provider. Still 600Kbps is pharkin quick even for your slowest speed. I've never seen above 700 kbps out of my cable setup.

Thank you. You just saved me from an idiotic call to my s.p. I could have ended up talking to their version of Taw and he'd be writing me up on his helpdesk horror diaries. (I am sure, Taw, that the guy would pale in comparison to you, however )

When I check my modem connection speed, I am supposed to be blazing along at 10Mbps ... OK so it's not 100Mbps but it's still pretty decent speed .... IF IT WERE TRUE! Never, in my time with this ADSL service did I ever "see" that kind of quickness..... I mean, at work I used to be in 10Mbps network environments so I figured there ought to some rough performance similarity. Far from it! And now I know why!
