@ SnS & @ Taw, sort of.

I'm glad you could admit it!! Also, now think about Soviet vs. US in this area of military expenditure. If you're right and the Soviets had a higher percentage spent toward their budget, yet I know we, the US, actually outspent them monetarily, that shows how lackluster their GNP/GDP was.

The Teflon President himself (or at least someone working for him) figured that one out back in the 80's. A small percentage of the world's largest national economy, whether by GNP or GDP is going to yield many more dollars in defense spending than anything that the Soyuz could do no matter how much they ramped up their budget. That was part of the motivation behind his Star Wars initiative.... Who else had the money to burn?

But, SnS: Are you sure about that large percentage of GNP in the 60s? (back then we measured GNP. I mean I am sure that it was a two figure % but almost half of GNP? That's a little incredible!

GDP came into use, I think, late 70's or early 80's if I read correctly.) I saw a comparison table which shows that GNP figures generally were larger than GDP by about 1.5% to 2.0% of the GDP amount.

I'm not going to say that I am absolutely sure, but I'm pretty sure it was around 47% and even higher in previous decades, especially during WWII. You also have to realize we were spending A LOT LESS on practically everything else.

There weren't all the cabinet departments to the government the way it is now. In fact we took a few Military departments away and set them up as their own separate entities. If you want to add those back in, yeah maybe our current military budget might be 7 or 8%.

I don't know when it came into use, so I'll take your word for it, but I know economists always love going back and refiguring old numbers with new economic devices so while GDP may not have been around, I'm certain someone has computed the numbers.

@ SS,

I don't really pay attention to American Spending. All I know is you guys have more cash then us (us being Canada) and spend alot.

You neglected to address the value of curency question that I previously stated.

And if you say that you only spend 3% of the GDP on the Army, whal Country X spends 50% of their GDP, you have to take into account the values of both. Otherwise it's meanless.
