-Chinese languages. I always wondered about the written language though. If a Cantonese speaker who knows no Mandarin and a Mandarin speaker who knows no Cantonese were to meet. Would they be able to communicate in writing? People have told me that they would be able to communicate because the writing system does not rely on vocalization "spelling" problems like you would with an alphabet.

I must admit "vulgarisation" is a perjorative term, but that's the aatitude early commentators put on the marked variance from "classical" Latin in the Western regions.
