I read somewhere that injury from being struck has something to do with whether you are the direct strike target and whether the bolt that strikes ends with you or is channeled elsewhere by something more conductive.

If it is a direct strike, you're toast. If the strike ends with you, you are at least severely burned.

If something more conductive is nearby that draws the charge away from you, you can survive with less crippling or even nominal effects.
