Can Wrestling be classed as a sport?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

look man, if synchronised swimming can be classed as a sport then anything can!

besides, in the dictionary sport is defined as

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively

which I believe covers wrestling....and women's mud wrestling for that matter, hallelujah!

wrestling is traditionally a highly respectable sport. please don't get it confused with the circus that is WWF or wtf it's called.

wrestling was one of the original olympiad contests back in ancient Greece, of course it goes back well before then. even in recent times it was a "proper" sport, my father was a semi-professional wrestler until he was in his 40s, and its only been the advent of television that has reduced it to the level of farcical comedy.

a genuinely competitive wrestling bout done by the official rules, without the showbiz paraphernalia, is a joy to behold.

wwf (or whatever its been forced to be called) is the bigest load of **** ive ever seen in my life. i seriously dont have the time to actually sit and watch this ****ing drivel on TV, people who ive met who love it, who live breath and act wrestling are in need of shooting. its not that i dont like you, its just i dont think you should contaminate the gene pool.

Wrestling is one of my 'buttons', i'm instantly opposed to anything remotely word wrestling related, INCLUDING talking about it. People who like that ****e have a low place in my opinion of them, i'm sorry, but you deserve it

@arcon did you even bother to read Taw's post??

@taw your surname isn't "haystacks" or "daddy" is it?

Post Mon Oct 20, 2003 8:48 pm

lol grom, no! although i did meet them on several occasions, as well as Mick Mcmanus and Jackie Pallo, but even then pro-wrestling was becoming a circus and the costumes were making an appearance, remember Kendo Nagasaki and Mighty John Quinn; it was WWF without the glitz and the girls, and a lot cheaper!

anyway u know what my surname is, and ur stuff went in the post today along with steels.

years ago I too like Arch used to HATE wrestling (I know where ur coming from on this Arch but stay with me ok?) because like choirs, boxing, and the RAF it was one of those things my dad used to force me to watch/partake in, and for years I just could not abide to even talk about it let alone suffer watching it. Now I'm a lot older I've changed my opinion, although I loath the WWF nonsense because it IS nonsense, but proper competitive wrestling is fluid, skilled, precise and graceful, and a genuine test of strength, stamina and ability; like all proper sports should be. So yes, in every respect, wrestling is a real sport, and still in olympic wrestling it maintains a high degree of integrity. I used to hate boxing too until recently when i decided to take it up, and even though I'm total rubbish and get the cr*p knocked out of me, it makes me feel great, much better than all that poncey aerobics and gym stuff. I go to a local amateur ring in Hanley a couple of late afternoons in the week as long as I'm not working late, to get my beating. Sometimes i even win, when I'm fighting the 16yr old flyweights.

My dad used to practice half-nelsons and boston crabs on me, much to his amusement and my agony.

well, if that soap opera for Rednecks is called a sport, it is because those guys are very good athletes... I am not a fan nor am I an advocate of the show but I just want to give those guys thier props.

On the other hand, I cannot call "Competative Eating" a sport! I was watching a show on the food network and these guys are slobs that eat for a living and consider these eating contests sporting events.

Can you believe it?

WWF, WCW, whatever... is made for idiots who believe it's real. 15 minutes of 'fighting' with steel chairs, and not a scratch?! Pleeease... It may have been worth watching for more than a microsecond before, but now it's pure crap.
@Saiyan: LOL, and OMG you re-surfaced with THAT as an opening post?! I'm... disappointed...?

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

in a word, no, it can't. As mentioned before tho, olympic wresteling can

Post Tue Oct 21, 2003 2:49 am

"Professional Wrestling" - No.

"Real Wrestling" - Yes.

Post Tue Oct 21, 2003 2:50 am

Professional wrestling as shown on TV like the WWF, etc., is not a sport in the sense that, in sports, the outcome is decided by skill and luck. The outcome of a WWF match is all scripted in advance.

But, it takes a degree of athleticism to be able to pull off a lot of the stunts you may see. So professional wrestling is, at least athletics. BTW the WWF actually had to change the way it legally identified itself from being a "sport" to an "entertainment" business.

Olympic wrestling, Turkish wrestling, Mongolian wrestling, etc., Those are sports.

wrestling is a sport
WWF however isnt wrestling its a cross between gymnastics/dancing/and poor acting as we all know
i occasionally watch it but i find the standard of choreography a bit poor these days and the actors are not as good as they once were

Post Tue Oct 21, 2003 11:55 am

I think steel summed that one up perfectly. WWF isn't wrestling its a tv show that sells a lot of tacky promo stuff. Effectively its the next gen "Action Man" with make-up and girls with enormous fake breasts.

@Taw I always remember wrestling as a kid being hairy men in ill-fitting leotards fighting it out on a saturday lunchtime in a working mans club somewhere in bolton! Its true though, even then the theatricals were sneaking in. But in the end REAL wrestling is a sport, and a very good one at that.
