I agree with Eraser about Hans Zimmer. (Note to self, must stop agreeing with Eraser so often,
)
Others, I like are the "Patriot Games" OST with those wispy Irish lilts and sorrowful music by James Horner. Unfortunately, James Horner repeats too closely some of his themes in other films.
In the same Jack Ryan series, "The Hunt for Red October" by Basil Paledoris. The Russian chants and heavy Russian classical themes is superb.
John Williams was better in the 80's and early 90's, with "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones" & "Jurassic Park," now his works all sound the same.
The Chemical Brothers did a great job with "Fight Club." It's one of the few times a movie has used modern music beats effectively where it didn't overburden the film.
I really enjoy Rachel Portman's work on "Chocolat." It is charming and full of lyrical melody.
However, my favorite soundtrack is "Le Fabuleux Destinie d'Amelie Poulain," or "Amelie" for us Americans. Yann Tiersen has made some of the greatest French ethnic music ever. And his piano solos are at the height of perfection not seen since Mozart or Beethoven. I now have all of his albums, the piano pieces are light, delicate and clever. I am soooo sick of modern pianists hitting the keyboard as if the harder you hit it is suppose to make you a classical piano player. I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!! And most of the rest of his works too!!!
