Half Life 2... Bye bye

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Half Life 2... Bye bye

OK, having a quick chat with Nickless and he said this aint here.

Long and short of it is that Half Life 2 has been delayed to next year. The company involved, Valve was hacked into and at least one third of teh entire source code was stolen, although someplaces are claiming it's 100% of it.

The Beta version is also now available. There's too many links to list to be honest.

How does source coding work? I've known what it does, but never knew how it has been implemented and remained effective.

I predict this will have little to no long-term effect on Valve. As well, Valve has stated they are still assessing the new release date, and Vivendi has jumped the gun. Vivendi does not own Valve, so they don't have the legal pull to force Valve to delay.

I'm really dissapointed with The Hacker Community... They know better than that. Much better.
In fact, I'm pretty sure noone in their right mind would wanna do this... I mean, what's the point? Maybe it was an inside job? Or even an excuse for being late...?
I dunno what to think but this just aint right the way it is now. There must be more to it.
I know that I sound weird (paranoid even) but think about it: Why would anyone want to hack into Valve and butcher HL2?

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

Heard somewhere that the release was delayed anyway...

Post Thu Oct 09, 2003 12:37 pm

this is the kind of hacking that gives hackers bad names...

...and what was the point? because some spotty-nosed s**t was "bored"...t***er

dont be so quick to condemn. Were only seeing this from the fact that we want our game now, if you read into it, the hacker has come forward to explain his actions, he says that Valve have lied, the game was no where near ready for release and that the supposedly On-The-Fly cool sequences weve seen in the E3 demo were, in reality, scripted. The hacker said that they did it to force Valve to stop lying and come out with a game that does what were all hoping it will do.

Once you get over the 6 month waiting period, you'll understand that if what this hacker and people that have played the leaked code is true, then we should be very thankful.

Basically, think the plot of TRON, twisted a bit.

I lie all the time about my progress in a project - noone really cares as long as I deliver at the end - even if they lied I'm with Valve. Who really cares if they lied as long as they get there? everybody does it.

When did Valve "lie"? I was never led to believe the game was unscripted. If you didn't script your game, it wouldn't be a game, it would be a really crisp painting. They've said many times HL2 would have a lot of scripted sequences, but the key difference would be that you would not be locked into some sort of cinematic view to watch the event (like many games), and that it would not always be so glaringly obvious when it did (HL1 was pretty obvious). The only lie was when Doug Lombardi was still telling people it would be ready by the 30th, less than a week before the due date. That was pretty crappy, but honestly, the community massively overreacted. We do not, after all, live in a perfect world.

Post-script: I pity anybody who knows the entire plot

I just hope HL2 comes out sometime soon. And Taw, you're right. The hackers didn't do it for some noble reason.

They're probably bragging to their hacker friends '1 5t0313 teh /-//_2 s0urc3 coed!!!1111'.

no time do the HL guys claim or imply that the game is free-form and contains no scripted sequences.

They actually did indicate that during a sequence at this years E3 presentation that a particular AI behaviour (a fire and movement battle tequnique) was not scripted but was AI controled. Another where the AI tries to open a door, finds it blocked by the player and makes a decision to fire through the window instead.

I can't say that I've ever heard anyone say that there are zero scripted sequences in HL2 but I think they are the instances that Arcon is referring to, correct me if im wrong.
If anyone is interested, It's in the file planet E3 HL demonstration video, it's a huge 600+ Mb download but goes for 25mins, it's worth a look if you have a quick connection.

As for the hacker, he can chew my ass. Why do these half-wits always come up with a stoopid excuse that they were doing everyone a great service. All he was really doing was enforcing his own misguided belief that he had something worthwhile to contribute to society, when he quite clearly did not. I wish these punks would grow a brain and realise that no matter how much they think that consumers have power, we are really all just a bunch of salivating sheep who love buying things, even if they are crap. I am fairly certain that the game we get, will be the exact same product Valve intended to release before this troglodite decided to become a most unwelcome step of the development process.
