No one else has answered you on these so I will. Starlancer is sort of a
"prequel" to Freelancer. Except the stories have nothing to do with each other, Freelancer just takes place, what is it, 800 years afterword.
Starlancer is mission based and linear. You have very little choice in your outcome. It is very much like the Wing Commander series, if you have ever played those.
Privateer was a spin-off of the Wing Commander series, and my favourite game. It was in essence Freelancer with cartoony graphics before the digital graphics age. It is an old game, but in my opinion it is so much fun! I play it to this day! But I'm sure with maybe the exception of Ebay, it is pretty hard to find.
