i got a mail from microsoft saying 'critical pack' and in it, it says this:

this is the latest version of security update, the "October 2003, Cumulative Patch" update which fixes all known security vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS Outlook Express as well as three newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to help protect your computer from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow an malicious user to run code on your computer. This update includes the functionality of all previously released patches.


System requirements Windows 95/98/Me/2000/NT/XP
This update applies to MS Internet Explorer, version 4.01 and later
MS Outlook, version 8.00 and later
MS Outlook Express, version 4.01 and later
Recommendation Customers should install the patch at the earliest opportunity.
How to install Run attached file. Choose Yes on displayed dialog box.

yip sounds like the worm alright
the warnings have all stated that it tends to arrive as a fake email from m$
if you have opened it try taking a look at symantec`s site there may be help there
if you want the security patches and believe me you do go to m$ site normally and dl them from there

MS Never ever sends updates through the mail!!!! Never, it's definitly a virus.

hey that would have been fun can you imagine the effect on the web if m$ had sent out sp1 to all xp users similtaneously !

With win XP if it's redgistered with your e-mail M$ does tend to send updates. They look pretty much like that, and contain a link to the M$ download site

yea, i figured. so i came to ask for confirmation of this worm. thanks for the advice. and no i didn't download it. going to delete the thing now.
