Maths Crap

I was in Maths today and....
the teacher (Mr. Day) described how to do Veried Proportion.
My reaction to he what he said was... wtf?
After asking him what it was, listening to him, listening to other people explaining each other, I figured it out and it was sooooo easy.
The irony is, why did he make it so hard to understand, or is that just natural for maths teachers. Blow you away with that wtf felling.

Im in set 2 and year 10. (England)

Anyone else had this happen?

Did you know 2+2 can = 1.5?

Post Thu Sep 25, 2003 5:44 pm

Hahaha, couldnt agree with you more!! Im set 1 year 10 and its staring to get to me!! Hour and 20 mins of maths is just intolerable, I swear whoever came up with that needs shooting...
AND WHAT THE HELL IS LCM AND HCF GONNA DO FOR ME IN FUTURE LIFE????

i daily regret not having paid attention in maths at secondary school though, which is mad, cause i hate the damn thing its just with all the programming and pysics i do, it helps to KNOW what were doing.

I'm doing Maths and Further Maths at A-level at the moment and I can assure you its downhill from there. You'll really need a very good teacher or get yourself a good book on the modules you do!
My teacher is awful, we were told to read an awfully short section on parametric equations, before being asked to prove certain rules with specific parametric graphs. Then, my teacher went out of his way to make anyone with a question look really stupid. Plus my teacher, although an absolute genius, mumbles like nothing else, and always takes anything he tries to teach us to ridiculous lengths. The number of times he's spent the lesson writing some crazy equations across the board using up an entire lesson, only to tell us at the end that they're unnessecary, is unbelievable

11th grade (US) and I am taking (dum dum dum) calculus. Usualy after some thought I can get things to click, but this limit buisness is really getting to me. I have it when I am told that "X" cannot = 2 for NO REASON.

Ok... need a new sig.... hmmm...............

I've never quite understood what calculus was supposed to mean. Is it differentiation in particular or integration or both on the whole? Here in England they're all taught as small separate sections

If you do it right and well, you could end up with the big boys in Area 51

Post Thu Sep 25, 2003 9:27 pm

If you do it too well, you also end up in Area 51, but then as a science subject, cause you MUST be alien if you can understand all of it

Here in Alberta, we have Math Pure, Applied, and, -4. (so there's math 10P, 10AP, and 14; 20P, 20AP, and 24; and 30P and 30AP.)

I'm in 30 Pure right now, and it's... *fun.*

Second unit in, and I'm having a hard time understanding logarithms. (First unit - translations - was easy.)

Of course, last year, I did almost no homework whatsoever and got an 80 final mark. (including final exam) Maybe I should start doing my homework, eh?

I don't know how the system works in England.

Calculus in Gr. 11? How'd you manage that? I'm only math 30 in Gr. 11.
Anyway... do those {X != 3} things happen to be also called asymptotes, or is calculus completely different? (I understand asymptotes easily...)

i finished my IGCSEs in yr10. i kno its early but we had a good teacher(in my last school, not the one i'm in now). whats more, i got thru with the highest grade achievable (i'm proud) annnd.. i dono wtf veried proportion is or is it a typo? varied proportions? still dono wtf that is.

anyways, now i'm labouring thru add.maths, or pre-cal. i got the binomial expansion down flat. tho i got off with a headache. i still suck at log and some other stuff. wait till you guys get to add.maths if you ever do. i strongly advise against it if u don like maths. i don like it too much either but i like it better than english or any other arts subject.
