Bad sectors

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Bad sectors

How do you know when you have them? XP's scandisk operates before booting Windows, and only displays the log for only a couple of seconds, then loads up Windows. And I have better things to do other than staring at the progress bar of my Scandisk - it's comparable to watching paint dry.

Why did they ditch the old Win98 Scandisk that scans while operating Windows? It used to be easier to spot bad sectors.

From the Microsoft XP user forum:

Q. What happened to ScanDisk?

A. Windows XP contains an improved disk utility called Check Disk, so ScanDisk is no longer necessary.

And from the Microsoft Knowledge base:

Check Disk cannot check a drive for errors or correct them if system files are open, therefore it configures itself to run before windows boots and locks the drive to be tested. For drives greater than 70 GB with many files, the operation may take a long time.

Even Norton Utilities uses Check Disk if you want to check your drive for errors.

I think the reason MS did away with Scan Disk was part of their drive to create a non DOS based operating system and if you check the knowledge base for XP you discover how many more of the old DOS based utilities have gone as well. I suppose Bill would call it progress.

How often do you need to run it anyway? I defrag maybe once a month and never run Check Disk.

Scan Disk still is there. Goto My Computer, then go Propordies of the Drive you want to scan. One of the taps should have something called Check disk which is the same. Microsoft just changed the name to make it seem new so they could raise the price.

That's not the old Scandisk, but Checkdisk. And that's the one I'm talking about all along. It simply prompts you that the CheckDisk will commence the next time you start Windows instead of doing it in Windows.

there are other utilities that will do it for you, do a google search
alternatively set up with a dual boot with win 98 and use your favourite

I never really saw the point of scandisk. It sits there and runs and then if it finds anything it says, "I found this and this and this." But if it finds anything you can't do anything with it and you just delete it anyway. I always feel a tinge of guilt when I hit X and skip scandisk but it seems pretty useless to me.

ScanDisk never did make major fixes, especially w/ bad sectors... It could fix FAT/File inconsistencies, but that affected some cracks/patches, so I never scanned my disk. As far as CheckDisk is concerned, it may prove unnecessary, because WinXP supports disk write-cacheing, so it doublechecks for potential errors before writing to disk. Just don't worry about it.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.
