This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Your hypothetical situation is dumb. Traveling 500,000 light years would take you well outside our galaxy. Since we can't even detect Earthlike planets orbiting stars within a dozen light years of Earth it is doubtful that we will ever be able to detect Earthlike planets in other galaxies. Also, wouldn't it be an amazing coincidence that out of the billions of stars to choose from, two independent expeditions would choose the exact same one to travel to.
The question of diverging cultures is interesting. People separated by 500,000 years would definitely have different languages and customs and they might look a little different but not super different. I mean in half a million years human beings won't have two heads or six fingers or tentacles or be blue.
They say that in 200 years English spoken in America and England will no longer be mutually intelligible. I don't think it will even take that long. I don't understand a lot of stuff from England, like the Spice Girls, or the Teletubbies, and a lot of movies that take place in the UK don't make any sense to me, like Clockwork Orange, or Trainspotting, or About a Boy.
Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

...or maybe...just maybe....you're the first?

True... prove that world behind your head exists... or indeed, prove that the entire universe wasn't created, oh... about 3 seconds ago...
In fact, didn't I start a thread on this subject a loooooong time ago???
If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

ok
u people obviosly do not get it still
1)we detect an eartlike planet 500,000 light years away
2)we develop tecnology for traveling huge distances in space
3)Nasa sends an expedition to the planet
4)More than 100 years later we develop faster than light speed travel
5)we forget about the 1st expedition
6)Nasa sends another expedtion to the same planet with the new tecnology
7)the second expedition get there first
the 1st expedition arrives when we allready inhabit the planet
9)they think that the people there are alien to the human species but they ARE humans
sounds kinda like the ending to a sci-fi movie
I'M FAT YOU'RE FAT!

if the planet is 500.000 lightyears away, and the first expedition doesn't have an FTL drive, it will take them over 500.000 years to get there... so if 100 years later an expedition is sent, there won't be a forgotten colony there, because the colonist are still on their way...
excellent point. tho your FTL would have to be at least 1.00040016times faster than speed of light for the expedition to arrive at the same time as the expedition that left earlier asuming they travelled close to speed of light. very close that we assume they travelled at same speed of light. but then again, that would be more interesting, like how time travel works. go to a distant star faster than speed of light and your in the future, relatively speaking, before those in the past know of what happens. forget time travel. we know what happened to the previous debates.
That would mean that we had forgotten out history, but the first ship would take quite a while to get across 500000 lightyears and a FTL ship could be built before it even got there. So they really would be aliens! And than we'd live in peace for a while, but they were really nurotic and wanted to destroy us from the onset. Sad really. We'd have a big war and they'd all die and we'd take thier planet.

the first expedition arrives afer the second one so they think that the aliens (humans in reality) look like them
