This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

net terms

we all know what they mean but where are the origins of them
"owns" or "owned" for example
"spam" i can guess at
but anyone ever wonder where these and all the other net/gaming terms come from
ie to start something like that off surely people say what the do you mean
if i walked into a bar and said "my new car owns"id get laughed at

Post Tue Sep 09, 2003 1:55 pm

doesnt it come from pimp talk.
in a quake match if you kicked someones ass you'd 'own' them i.e. they'd be your biyatch, hence the term "0wnZ0r b1tch3s":

If you use words like hax0r and rox0r in real life you deserve exactly what you get. Which is a brutal hazing for a good couple of weeks. A lot of folks are working hard to ungeekify the computer industry and a loose comment like that sets the movement back a good month.

i think you will find speech will meet you in the middle somewhere since the explosion of text messages
thats becoming like a new language all by itself

what? personally i dont think the geek comunity should conform at all. uber, h4xx0rz, and 0wnz0r 81tch3z is what geeks are all about, why change ourselves and they way we choose to live, if the (so called) cool people cant handle it, then they should go back to a life of sports, women and sunshine. Me? ive found my vocation and i conform for no man (unless that man has a lot of money for me)

Well, it´s best if there´s still a difference between things being said on the net and things being said in real life. IMHO of course I mean, I´m not using LOL or ROFL or LMAO on my work, because most will have me comitted if I do !

Post Tue Sep 09, 2003 4:52 pm

LOL

Lol is actually a Dutch word, it means "fun".
So in Holland you can use LOL without being committed

i almost smacked the crap outa this wannabe guy who kept saying OMFG and LOL, out loud. like actually saying LOL aloud, but then again, the only thing he used the net for was playing UO so i guess its like hitting a paraplegic for not being able to walk.

hehe, "ungeekify"

I heard that so-called 1337/leet/lee7/whatever speak came from a group of Hackers that made a new "language" but honestly, I don't see the need for the involvation(what?) of numbers mixed into norm4l w0rd5...oops. No. but really, I can understand "owns" and "newbie" and acronyms such as "lol" and "rofl" but not "! p/\/3d j00r /\/3\/\/8!3 4r53" (sorry for those of you who actually know this 'language' and see some ::errors:: )seriously, its like useless languages such as "double dutch" and "pig latin"

But yea, if you walk into a bar, and say, my car owns, you'd be..um...not considered normal... O_o

ooosh-shay on the ig-pay atin-lay. its the best language ever!!!

anyway, 1337 pwns j00!! i jsut laugh when ppl use it, its like "i understand" but llamas dont, so its more amusing". ppl that actually take it seriously are a joke though, i always imagine when people write stuff like "omfg, pie = teh win" they are giggling away in their rooms.

= shooosh on the pig latin ?? not sure.. but i think thats what it is. nvr heard of double dutch tho.

i'm a tad curious why they 'own' when they win.. otherwise.. i have got no idea as to how human kind came up with the stuff.

Post Wed Sep 10, 2003 5:35 am

oh man, double dutch is funky. Its like if you wanted to say "hello" it would be "hibellibo" kinda funky, eh? And, yes, just about everyone i know makes fun of 1337 sp33---err speak, like just adding that extra 1 at the end of some exclamatory sentence!!!!1 cant believe that there is some doubt that maybe some people actually use it seriously... o_o

Post Wed Sep 10, 2003 1:03 pm

no, no one takes it seriously. especially in message boards when people have all the time they want to write the message, so those 1's in !'s are purely for show, and its funny
