Need help- buying New Speakers

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Need help- buying New Speakers

I was wondering which speaker system i should get.

Cyber Acoustics CA-5001 or Logitech z-640

Both are 5.1 Systems, and both will fit my soundcard. The CA model is $15 more, but it has about 10 more watts.

Thanks in advance.

havent tried either but when i buy a set i am not swayed buy a set being more expensive as often they arent any better and normally i dont get anywhere max on volume i doubt you will either
belive it or not classical music is the best thing to guage the difference in sound quality if they will let you hear them

Yeah, i was just thinking that. I will never use the full 80 Watts more than likley.

You should buy the B&W Nautilus... I hear they're OK...

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

I looked those up, they are too big for what I am looking for.

Post Tue Aug 12, 2003 4:55 pm

10 watts won't make much of a difference

if you turn either set up all the way, it's going to be loud, regardless...
so i say go for the cheaper ones

What is your primary use for the speakers? Games? Music? Movies?
and ask yourself, "do I really need 5.1 speakers?"

If you're using it for music, then it's a waste of real estate. You can get a cheap amp + 2.1 speakers for less than 99 USD (or whatever the 640s cost). ALL music (save SACDs and DVD-As and XCDs) are encoded in 2.0/1 format.

Movies... nice effect, but again, the above rule can also be applied here. Do you need 5.1?

Games.. well.. games generally don't have high-quality sound, nor do they require as much. *shrug*

Getting a higher quality 2.1 speaker set is a better way to go. Go to your local speaker shop/audio eq shop and they'll help.

I am a sound freak. I love to be in the middle of sound. I will never go back to a 2.1 speaker set. I love the surrond sound.

If you were wondering, I will be useing these speakers for dvd movies, music, and games.

Some games do have 3d sound. Take Freelancer for example.

A sound freak, eh? Try this...

Technical Specifications :B&W model Nautilus

Dimensions
---------------------------------------------
Height: 1210mm (47.6in)
Width: 430mm (16.9in)
Depth: 1105mm (43.5in)

Net Weight
---------------------------------------------
110kg / 243lb (loudspeaker: 60kg base: 50kg)

Freq. Response
---------------------------------------------
25Hz - 20kHz ± 0.5dB on reference axis

Freq. Range
---------------------------------------------
-6dB at 10Hz and 25kHz

Power Handling
----------------------------------------------
100W - 500W into 8 ohms one amplifier channel is required for each drive unit. Electronic crossover supplied with speaker.

Drive Units
----------------------------------------------
Unit 1: High Frequency: 2 domed units of anodised aluminium of similar construction, 50mm and 25mm in diameter, handle the 880Hz-3.5kHz and 3.5kHz-25kHz ranges respectively. All drive units are completely mounted on silicone rubber O-rings to decouple the from the cabinet

Unit 2: Mid-range/high frequency: From 220Hz to 880 Hz, a 100mm flat-fronted unit is employed to prevent the gentle cavity resonance found in conventional cone units at around 2kHz interfering with the output from the upper/midrange unit. A rare earth magnet assembly with hollow pole is used to minimise the obstruction to the rear radiation from the diaphragm.

Unit 3: Bass: A 9.5kg (21lbs) magnet with a 100mm (4in) voice coil acts as the massive motor of the 300mm (12in) bass unit (10Hz-220Hz). This, when used in the exponential line enclosure, results in a high-pass behaviour so over-damped that the traditional second-order characteristic is replaced by two distinct first-order slopes and no stored energy. A 250 micron one-piece aluminium cone ensures coherent motion to beyond 1.5kHz.

Finish
--------------------------------------
Midnight Blue, Black, Silver

Amplifier Description: One channel per drive unit 100 - 500 W into 8 ohms supplied with electronic crossover

Oh, and, the price is... well...

WOW. almost 250lb? What the hell would you use those things for?

Post Thu Aug 14, 2003 12:09 am

What the hell would you use those things for?

Killing huge cockroaches?
250lbs = bazalth rock (sp?) /cooled magma/ + brass + a little bit of plastic.
Scientists tested these speakers, and the result was: 0.075% distortionof the sound. That's some audiophile material, eh...?
So anyways, the speakers are marked as "outdoors listening kit" and are reference speakers in the top-of-the-line class. They are hand made (takes 3-5 months), and they cost around $27.000 (pair).
I think I'm in love.... *drifts off* (and loses it completely...)

I'm a trained sound engineer. I've engineered bands globally for over 10 years now using the most up-to-date technologically advanced equipment available in the industry...I've rigged cabs that could make your ears bleed from 100 yards away....I can put people to sleep at 50 paces with stories of fx units, speaker systems and amplification modules....and I can honestly say...without a shadow of doubt...

you're all nerdier than me.
