Overclocking

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Overclocking

This isn't really a technical issue for Freelancer, but i have a question about overclocking and the like.

O.k., I have this computer, and I'm playin some games, and all of a sudden, no picture or sound....nothing. Never ever happened with Freelancer, only with a few games, such as SOF 2, RTCW, and AOM (can't be bothered to write them out) A couple of times the computer actually fully restarted in the middle of the intense gameplay (ok, not that intense but whatever). Incredibly frustrating, especially when you're playing with 5 other peoples and your team is about to win/lose or whatever. (BTW, this is not a one-time thing, happened 3-4 times today alone.)

1.67 ghz AMD Athlon XP,
64 meg ATI Radeon 7500--yes, drivers up-to-date and DirectX too
256+256 RAM

Eh, ok, I heard somewhere that AMD Athlons run very hot, and may be contributing to the random crashes. I don't think that it's the video card, because I replaced the stock, built-in s3 card before the ATI, ('cause it sucked and stuff) and it still happens as it did before. The graphics are much better, but it doesn't help when your 'puter dies. So, someone told me to go into the system bios and turn down the AGP a notch (I have no idea what that means, but I'll figure it out somehow) and add another fan or 4

The thing is, I never tweaked any part in the 'puter, except for adding a new video card and more memory. Would reformatting the 'puter be a way to fix this, or is it something that can't be fixed. I haven't tried turning down the AGP yet, so I'm not sure if that will fix it. If anyone has any suggestions or tips that I may try to make my 'puter work finally, it is very appreciated.

It could be some sort of corrupt file on you hardrive itself. Maybe if you have time and patience you could write zero's to you hardrive and do a total reinstall of everything. Then if that doesnt work your gonna have to find somebody smarter then what I am. Hope it helps.

Yea I don't really have a problem with that, it's just that it takes such a long time, trying to figure out who wants to keep what and all, then reinstalling all of the essential programs everyone likes, and deleting the crap that windows puts on that you don't want ::cough:: AOL(its a shared computer), then all of the other people will be all

It's because of all those games and those 'things' you downloaded, clogging up the computer, making it all slow...
But, on the other hand, reformatting the hard drive might prove to be better than trying to locate the specific problem...considering there is a 'crapload' of 'crap' I put on the poor little underpowered machine

I think that microsoft's products are really crappy, thus making them cheap and crappy. But, I enjoy cheap, so I'm gonna stop here

Chiggy, it does sound like it could be a heat issue. But thee are other things it could be too.

This thread has some good info in it, that might help keep that computer running right once you figure out what's that root cause of the insta-death. It could be a power issue, maybe a simple connection problems or even a chipset issue. If the computer is making some weird noises, you might want to check on the fans and that could be the heat problem.

i run amd chips too. they need lots of air cirulation. lost my main processor fan a couple of years ago, and the thing started to flake out. wipe the hd and reinstalled. no change. replaced the fan with a premium product and added a case fan. what do you know. no more probs.
good luck.
