Vid Card dilemma

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Vid Card dilemma

Im having a bit of a dilemma over which video card to buy. Considering I really only ever take a half assed interest in the word of video cards I thought i'd ask you guys what you think will give me my best bang for my buck. Here are my options and prices, keep in mind it's in Australian dollars, so it's a fair bit more than the US.

Hercules Radeon 9600 Pro 128Mb $515.00
Asus GeForce4 Ti4200 128 MB $295.00
Leadtek GeForce FX5600 Ultra 256 MB $450.00
Leadtek GeForce FX5900 128MB $790.00
Leadtek GeForce FX5900 Ultra 256 MB $995.00

Im currently running a Geforce 3 and I really don't want to be paying mega bucks for a small perfomance increase.
So I guess what Im asking you folk is, if you had the spare cash to buy any of these cards but there is (as you can see) quite a large difference in cost, what would you do to get the most 3DMark03 points for your buck?

Keep in mind that I'm having a very hard time trying to justify spending a thousand dollars on a graphics card.

I haven't included the Radeon 9800 because the performance difference between the 128Mb FX5900 isn't all that great (or so i've read) and the FX5900 is $200 cheaper.

When it comes to video cards, it's always about 1% more = 50 (Ausie)bucks more.
My recommendation would be the Asus GeForce4 Ti4200 128 MB, ViVo version. Maybe you should consider a MicroStar GF4Ti 4800 128MB ViVo (it's a 4200 with AGP 8x, a far better cooler, tons of CD's in the package and faster memory), it is about 5-10% more money, but you get better OC capabilities and a better pic quality. I'd rule the FXes out, because you only get improvement when using 4xFSAA and Anisotropic Filtering.
In every other xcase the 4200Ti is faster because it has a MUCH better fill rate.
I never liked ATi cards, so I'm a bit biased there, but we all know that Catalyst driver are far from good, when especially compared to the quality of the Detonators. Plus, with ATi cards that are "powered by ATi", not "built by ATi", you never know what you'll get...
Hope this helped.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

Hercules is a good brand though, so I wouldn't completely rule them out. IMO you should go for it or the Geforce4. I think Chetnik has exaggerated about the poor quality of the Catalysts, because I've been hearing they have been making great progress to bring them up to par with the Detonators. You might spend some time at various websites reading reviews, because you probably won't be disappointed with either card.
