Another intersting debate

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Another intersting debate

Seen as the other one as kicked off quite well here's anther to flex the old grey matter.
There are (Apparently) 5 possible reasons on how the Universe started or how it currently is.
I can remember 3. Any ideas what the other two are?
1: Big Bang Theory. Universe started off the way scientists believe, as been around for however many billion of years and will have a choice of endings.
2: Ultimate force. A deity (Un-named as I don't want this getting all relgion on me) or such like created the universe as we know it.
3: The two second universe. The universe was created two seconds ago (Time irrelevant actually. Point being, just now )

Can't remember the other two. What do you think, and do you have any opinions on the above two? (Amy as well skip 1 and 2. They've been covered too much and lets keep religion out of this)

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars...

4. Steady State Theory: the universe just is, and everything in it is floating along as steady as you please. No bang.

5. Pulsating Big Bang: Universe collapses. Big bang. Universe collapses again. Big Bang again. Rinse. Repeat. Always repeat.

In that case i know a 6th, the dream theory. The universe is a dream of someone/thing or a program or higher/lower plane equivilant computer.
So what do poeple think of these ideas? I always liked the two second theory. Maybe I just didn't eat that Chilli con Carni, maybe the universe was created with the thought that I had done so. Also brings up the "prove the past" paradox which was always great fun at school when people would use TV camera's an arguement that the past existed.
Oh! Thats another one, the singluar theory. Only you exist, no one else. Prove what is behind your own head.

A note about theory #3 -- Time is really just a measurement made up by humans. You won't find it anywhere, foe example, it is not something you could ever point it out to someone, like its an object "Oh look, theres time, right over there." Also, we measure time with numbers, another thing made up by humans in our incessant quest to quantify things. So, does time really exist at all?

This one is kinda linked to the big bang theory; Universe was created by the intersection of 2 or more membranes that exist in something like the 11th dimension and this caused the massive explosion that was what we know as the Big Bang.

@ Huffer
Time is the fourth dimension. Movement could not exist with out time. The changing of position of one object in one place to another, requires change. Without time all objects would exist in the three dimensions but nothing would be capable of change.
At least thats my twisted logic on it

Post Thu Jul 17, 2003 8:44 pm

wrong!!

you cannot see the fourth dimension. so how do you know what it is

Post Thu Jul 17, 2003 8:59 pm

@Locutus. Who says you annot see the fourth dimension? The act of watching the other three move could be said to be watching the fouth dimension progress.

What's the difference between theory 2 and theory 6? And, although I subscribe to the big bang theory, I don't think there's anything about it that rules out the notion of God, but maybe I'm wrong?

Th edifference between theory 2 & 6:
2 states that some being on a higher plane created us, therefore we genuinly do exist.
6 is where we part of said beings mind wether said being is organic or electronic, therefore we are figmant of an imagination (Ever notice how some of your dreams are really real? or clicking of transistors somewhere

the second theory is one which is doubtfull, however the third thoery you mention lutz is one which could possibly be true

@ gowserpaul

the theory is there, so it exists! neither of us knows the truth. so all can be true. and all are doubtfull. let's not create a religion infested spam-thread.

the theory of infinity... the univese is so large that its avarge population is 0.. so therefore anyone you meet must be a product of your deranged imagination

Yes, that sounds like the sort of tosh Douglas Adams would say. Assuming its the same Douglas Adams.

Post Wed Jul 23, 2003 7:01 pm

Well, its not really tosh is it?

I was reading an article on somewhere discussing paralell universes and this was an interesting point of information: If the universe we live in really is infinite, then somewhere there is a person identical to you, but with subtle differences (eg. they may stop reading here) that arise from them making a different decision to you, (like stopping reading this). Now it seems that the big brains have worked out that the nearest 'you' is ~10x10*24 (10 times 10 to the power of 24) metres from your current position. Doesnt seem like much does it? but consider that the furthest into the universe we can see is ~ 6x10*24 metres.
