Would You Explore Space?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Would You Explore Space?

Suppose humans suddenly made an immense technological breakthrough, and faster than light space travel was possible, leading to a series of manned exploration ships going out to see what is really out there in the galaxy. You are offered the chance to be a crewmember on one of these ships -- it means leaving everything you have ever known, and safety is not garanteed.
Would you go?

I know I would.

Curiosity killed the cat... But what the Hell, count me in!

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

I'd be a coward and wait 'til there can be higher chance of survival. What good is exploring the wonders of space if you die trying to get there? I'd feel more comfortable if the level of technology were high enough so that traveling in space would be something like taking an Airplane flight.

Depends on how much faster than light, if it would take say take under a year to get to sirius and thier was none of that crap where, when I get home everyone I know is dead, then maybe.

What good is trying at all if something like safety is going to stop you? I'd much rather see something like this in person (guess \ access is the login and pass) than sit around and watch Star Trek spinoffs for another thousand years. Heh, check it out, that planet in the bottom right is inhabited. Well, not for long. Hehe.

unfortunatley, when you got back from a FTL trip everyone would be a lot older

count me in but only when they can prolong a mans lifespan.

if its now, then i would.. if its later, i'll cross that bridge when i get to it. i'm kinda getting bored of the same old heads with a torso and arms and legs.. i want something unique.

Science is knowledge.
Knowledge is power.
Time is money.
power = work/time
therefore, knowledge= work/money
therefore, money = work/knowledge
therefore, money is inversely proportional to knowledge.

therefore,

The more knowledge you have, the less money you have.

Prepare for the worst, for you have read the worst.

Well lets see, the chance to do something stoopidly dangerious and see whats out there, well i think id have to say yeah, (Sky diving just isnt scaring me as much as it used to, thats like the next step up lol)

Not really. Going at high sub-light speeds for a long time would. If any method of FTL travel is achieved, relativity probably won't matter anymore.

Not as many intrepid adventurers here as I thought there would be.

I'd try; as long as it wasn't suicide...which is probably what the first FTL expedition is going to be. You have to be reasonable here. Would you really be prepared to leave everything for the chance to try and reach some wonderful galactic oddity? I know I wouldn't. Especially since it is so dangerous. that's not to say that there aren't those who would do so. However, I doubt that there would be as many.

what? dont be crazy, you think scientists are gonna wait till the FIRST ftl test to send people, dont be stupid, they'll send computers first to make sure its do-able, then monkeys, then LOADS of monkeys to make sure it wasnt a fluke. then a load of americans to make sure its idotproof () then...THEN will they declare it safe for exploration means, then i get on board. its not like were dumb enough to go "hey this rocket MIGHT take us to speeds faster than light, lets strap it to this capsule and launch ourselves into space". were not rednecks here, were living in the digital age

We don't need FTL to explore anyway. I for one would like to drive a little submarine into the oceans of Europa, or see Saturn with my own eyes unaided, none of which require a warp drive.
