You make it sound like MS puts a gun to everyone's head and make them follow their ways. Well people do follow their ways but not because of the gun. However MS did it, it was persuasion. Carrot dangling, not stick beating. So what if they're prone to monopoly? who wouldn't want to rule the market? if not MS, something else would. I don't even think that it's evil. The strongest, the smartest win. Nature works that way, why shouldn't the economy?
And why would they intentionally cripple their own product? conspiracy theory, man. Being good is good. Being intentionally bad is never good.
If Linux and Unix people can match MS in MS' game, then good. More competitions = lower price. But I don't think anyone should whine about MS being too powerful. It is too powerful because the others let it be, not because MS is evil.
