Closing threads, RIght or Wrong?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Closing threads, RIght or Wrong?

As you all know by now two of my threads have been closed. I think unjustly, the moderator (wizard) thinks else. His last reason was because we used words such as Narf. Thats ridiculous, he obviously hasn't seen the Warner Brothers Pinky and The Brain. He also thought that nick names are not fun. Where I come from everyone has a nick name and they are not insulted by them. If they are inapropiate where Wizard comes from then he should not close threads do to cultural differences. And he wants me to e-mail my disagreements, I think not, because I think everybody should now why I disagree and visa verse on wizards part.

*wizard leave this thread open. I want to see what other people think of your modding frenzy.

*everyone else state your oppinion.

Post Mon Jun 09, 2003 7:01 pm

erm, sorry topgunsss but i think you should try and have a civilised correspondance with Wizard first, rather than getting shouty and noisy.
I doubt the moderators are gonna be impressed by your flouting of the rules set in the FAQ:

If you feel you where unrightfull censored, mail Bargib, and he might look into it!

Look, there are plenty of reasons to get your threads locked, and many of them are not your fault at all. Threads get locked when it gets flame-ish, political, (too) sexual, religious, personally attacking, bashing in nature, and other controversialities. And there are the less severe reasons: like yours, for example, get locked because it headed NOWHERE. Can you honestly say that the last page of the thread was still ON topic? I saw already people using your thread as a spam field to increase post counts. Topics that get off-topic gets locked (no, using the "it's the off-topic forum, it's natural to go off-topic" excuse is lame and only gets rolling eyes )

Ok, I admit it's natural to start a "Part Deux" thread. But you started it immediately after the original's lockdown, you're inviting just more spam. It's only natural to give the community some breathing space and time to replenish our creativity and thoughts before starting to converse on the same topic.

Is your thread controversial? Cpbuja didn't seem to mind much, so it was ok.
But hey, it was already 6-7 pages long, and most threads didn't even survive one. It was its time. I personally think it's better to kill my own thread (by asking for the lock or deleting it myself if it gets REALLY bad) than to let it be spoiled by spam, or even worse, flame.

I support Wizard. It does not mean that I am against you, but believe someone who speaks from experience (since SL era) and has had more than a few of my own threads locked down as well, for far less important reason. You just need time to adjust to the house rules. Also, I know Wizard for a long time, although not in real life, and I can understand and support his actions on this one.

Are you mad at me because I posted something about: Quality is more important than quantity?

But anyways, here we go!

His last reason was because we used words such as Narf

There were posts with words like this in it, we like to call that spam. And spamming is not good. (understatement alert)

Thats ridiculous, he obviously hasn't seen the Warner Brothers Pinky and The Brain.

I grew upwith that cartoon! I even made a comic about it, let me get you the link
I like it, I surely do!

And he wants me to e-mail my disagreements,

Yup, and I think it was better when you did. I had this argument with Deviant a hwile ago and after a bit of flaming on the forum we settled it. We're friends now. These things are always better taken off by e-mail. I know this out of experience.

*wizard leave this thread open. I want to see what other people think of your modding frenzy

Frenzy? Don't make me laugh. I have the right to open/close, move and sticky threads when I think it's necesary. This was one of those occasions IMO.
If you want to call me a dictator or whatsoever, do. You won't make yourself populair around by bashing the moderator(s)

As you all know by now two of my threads have been closed.

Why I locked the second one? Because I knew it was going to turn out like the first one.

I could have locked the first one after 45 posts. Just read reply 40-45 and you know why.

One last thing:

How about you come grab a beer in my local pub on Friday

Ow and topgunsss, why do you want the opinion of others? So they can support you and force me to open the threads?

I support the locking of threads for many of the very reasons stated above. It's not an exact science, but if a thread oges WAY off topic that's not the original posters fault, that's the responders forcing the issue. Get upset with them for not staying on topic.

Can you just imagine how difficult it would be if we didn't close threads that do not stay on topic around here? Christ we'd be bringing the server to it's knees with people searching for that reply that might be of some help to them.

Closing threads, although a touchy subject serve a higher good for the community and the web site as a whole. Issues with closing threads should ALWAYS be discussed with the owner Gibby...no exceptions.

We (moderators) get our hands slapped to by the owner, most just don't know about it. But the proof is in the pudding so to speak and a moderator "rebel" won't last long around here.

Good work Wiz!

I agree with the mods on this one! In the SL era we had a lot of spam fuelled threads which can eventually lead to problems, but since more mods have been appointed things run incredibly smoothly. I say rock on Wiz ya crazy dutch fool

Post Mon Jun 09, 2003 9:53 pm

I agree with Stinger and Wizard in this case. The FAQ makes it explicitly clear that if your thread does not meet the guidelines (and not neccessarily to your fault) it may be moved, locked, or deleted. In the event you feel your thread was locked or deleted, you have the option to e-mail Bargib. Bringing this up publically is not the answer.

Post Tue Jun 10, 2003 1:26 am

@topgunsss: I know you wanted another 90+ posts thread... But that wouldn't prove anything. Your rank wont mean anything if there's no real expirience behind it. You understand what I'm saying, right? ( I don't )
Look, it's moderators' job do close/move/delete posts/threads in the best interest of the people visiting this site, and also sparing the server from unnecessary spam... ( which I'm posting right now )
I didn't really mind the thread topic or the posts, but I agree that it was going nowhere. Just let it rest in piece, OK?
One more thing: no one here is trying to "teach you a lesson" -- it's just that you reacted in an impulse, anger even, when you saw that your "masterpiece #2" got locked down, and we decided to tell you to think about it one more time... And realise that Wizard was right.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

Im 100% behind Wizard on this. Threads headed no where just waste space and take up valuable bandwidth which we don't exactly have a lot of as you can see with the sometimes sluggish forums.

Post Tue Jun 10, 2003 2:10 am

Beh. He's the mod. He is the supreme dictator of the world..err, forum. So just support him. I honestly have no problem with any thread being locked, stickied, edited, etc. After all, it is just a thread. Not to mention that it really was going off topic.

How about you come grab a beer in my local pub on Friday

Love to, boy, but you're not legal yet, are you? Now I see. That's why you need ME for: to get you the beers. No thanks. I don't want to have to "Bob" for you after the drinking session and have to explain to your parents why you're trying inexhaustibly to pronounce "cogito ergo sum".
