SSJ is in need of help!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

SSJ is in need of help!

I posted this in the FL Techincal Issues Forum but didn't get much of a reply, so I thought that I would try here! Basically I was forced to wipe my hard drive the other night due to problems the computer had been having. (However Freelancer had always worked fine) but now when attempting to install, either normal or express, it gets to 2% on the file br_equip.mat and will not continue. A message comes up saying "Check if you have enough memory or if the file is in use" and I find this confusing beacuse I've got a 60Gb hard drive with next to nothing on it and no other FL files are installed. I checked the disc and it isn't scratched but the game just refuse to install. Is there anything I can do? As the 10 day return policy from the shop where I purchased it has obviously long since expired.

Your help will be greatly appreciated!

No scratches on the cd? Tried copying the entire cd to your HD? If it doesn't work it's proof your cd became somewhat ureadeble. If you can copy it to your HD try installing it from there.

Something that might work is if you go to ´Start´and than ´Run...´ and then you type in ´msconfig´. This is the Windows register and then do a search on any Freelancer files and delete them. After that, try to install FL again. This might work, but be careful with this register, because if you delete the wrong files.....

Did you format your HDD? If yes did you do a quick-format or the unconditional format? Doy you have 2 or more partitions on the HDD? Which OS are you using?
What kind of a CD-ROM do you have? Is it IDE or SCSI(optional question)? Did you temper with your hardware lately?
Answer those q's and i'll tell you how to fix things. I promise.

I'm using XP and currently have 4 user domains. I completly erased mine (the one with all FL files) and then went onto all the other 4 and deleted any FL related files which were still present by deleting the necessary programme files. Didn't do a complete Eraserure (just want to make that one clear sorry for the confusion)

Somebody in the Techincal Forum said to use CD clone. I downloaded it and follwed their instructions. After copying it for an hour and a half it was staying at 3% so I got impatient and aborted.

I had an idea of borrowing a friends FL disk, installing it onto my hard drive then returning it to him and play the game using mine. Would that work?

I'd much rather use mine though so if anybody can tell me what to do I would be in their debt!

Try using a friends, this would help you to narrow it down a bit - if it still refuses to install then you know it is probably a problem with the hardware, if it does then you know it is most likely a problem with the disc.

I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots, or only five? Tell you the truth, in all the excitement I kind of lost track myself. Being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful hand gun in the world, it'll take your head clean off. So you gotta ask yourself one question - do I feel lucky? Well......do ya? Punk?

Oh dear...
You cannot copy the CD content onto your HDD because it has "SafeDisc II" protection. The only program that sometimes can do it is FarStone VirualDrive ver. 6.0 or later (use intelligent extraction method).
The fact that you did not format your HDD tells me that the problem is in registry traces.
You'll have to edit the Master Registry... Start --> Run... --> regedit /OK/
In the submenu Edit, choose Find..., and type Freelancer. Delete everything that is directly related to it.
NOTE: If you chose the "Install for all users" option during the first install... Trouble ahead.
In that case, try to install it from a different account(other than the one it was installed on), again choosing the "install for all users", then uninstall it from where it was originally installed.
If you're still not sure, correct my assumptions, so that I know where we're standing...

Thats why I suggested using cloneCD...

And it shouldnt take ages to read to an image file although it depends on A) how scratched the CD is and how fast your CD drive is.

Post Mon Jun 02, 2003 4:06 pm

CloneCD cannot read trough SafeDisc II without at least 6-bit interleaved overlapping... That's why I asked what type of CD he uses...

Well i've made images of safedisc2 protected games and they've worked fine...

Post Tue Jun 03, 2003 3:08 am

Once again: It depends on the type of your CD-ROM drive. If it is capable of doing 6-bit interleaved overlapping, and can read RAW and Cooked CD's then it's OK. (provided that it uses strandard buffered-burst read method, with 25 block units and 2 block synchronisation)

quick question..if you know a single file that is bit banged up and the rest is fine.. is there a software can make a RAW read?

argh i'm never gonna get paid, Goodbye a million credits

Nero-Burning Rom, use the Nero Image Drive that comes with it. It managed to read Cooked CD in RAW mode (reads subchannel data), so it's pretty good.

Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD - 117R is the drive I'm using (if thats any help).

Where can I get Neo Burning Rom? Or what ever it is!

Post Tue Jun 03, 2003 4:49 pm

Yes, it helps. The drive doesn't support overlapping directly, but can emulate it with proper software. (as I predicted)
You can d/l Nero Burning Rom trial version here (You wont need the software for more than half an hour anyway).
After you install Nero, go to Start --> Programs --> Ahead Nero --> Nero ImageDrive Installer. Now the Nero Image Drive will create a Virtual Drive device that emulates a standard CD/DVD rom. You need to build an image of your Freelancer CD. After that you'll need to 'mount' the image onto your new, virtual CD/DVD ROM. If the autorun is disabled, you need to use Windows Explorer to locate the Setup.exe file on the virtual drive and install Freelancer. If you still have problems, or need to ask anything, fire away! I'll answer as soon as I can.
Good luck.
