NGC 1365: A Nearby Barred Spiral Galaxy

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

NGC 1365: A Nearby Barred Spiral Galaxy

its astronomy pic of the day now.. tell me if you guys don't like it.

Explanation: Many spiral galaxies have bars across their centers. Even our own Milky Way Galaxy is thought to have a bar, but perhaps not so prominent as the one in NGC 1365, shown above. The persistence and motion of the bar imply relatively massive spiral arms. The placements of bright young blue stars and dark dust lanes also indicate a strong rotating density wave of star formation. NGC 1365 is a member of the Fornax Cluster of Galaxies. Because NGC 1365 is relatively nearby, simultaneous measurements of its speed and distance are possible, which help astronomers estimate how fast our universe is expanding.

p.s. i can't seem to see what bar its talking about.

It's interesting, but I hope you're not planning to do one everyday... seems like a spamming scheme. Apologies if this is not your intention.

Nice pic, kimk. Looks like you're interested in astronomy. Maybe the "bars" are the dark lines that run through the center of the galaxy?

Very Cool. I don't pretend to know anything about astronomy, (I have a Telescope) but maybe the bar is some sort of Barrier?

what i really want to know is what is at the center of galaxies, ive heard theories of giant stars etc. how cool would that be? Actually i think the coolest thing about space is how big it is, you really get a sense for this if you ever go to a planetarium.

Peace through superior firepower.

I wonder if there will be any Core Planets like in Star Wars?

NEARBY????????????

that galaxy is almost 80.000.000 Lightyears from the current coordinates

Post Wed Apr 16, 2003 3:12 pm

that is nearby in spacial terms

and i believe that the current hypothesis is that there is a giant black hole at the center of the universe

The marked area is the bar they are referring to.

@godlike entity, the centre of a galaxy, like ours, is supposedly a dense cluster of stars, big and small, hence the entire galaxy turns on this centre where more mass in proportion to the entire galaxy is placed.
@arognus, that's what i thought, but dismissed it.
@top-gun, YOU HAVE a TELESCOPE?? thats soooo cool . . . i always wanted one, but my dad got me a MICROscope...

I have a telescope, but I know jack about operating it.

You don´t know how to ´operate´ your ´telescope´ FF ?
